Editorial Reviews

Review

"I have been really inspired by 30-Minute Earrings. (It) has beautiful, chic ideas that are instantly classy. Simple techniques lead you to awesome designs." - Candie Cooper, Savvy Crafter

"This is one of the most inspiring jewelry making books I have ever seen. The photos are clear and close-up. The designs are modern and unique. Just leafing through the book gave me inspiration for many different designs. This book is good for those wanting to take their skills to a new level, and for those seeking inspiration with their own designs." - Leslie Todd

"In this new release by Marthe Le Van, 45 designers share 60 pairs of earrings that you can make in 30 minutes. What better way to enhance your wardrobe than to cut, bend, string, saw, drill, hammer, and solder pieces of jewelry. The projects become more advanced as you progress through the book. Each is inexpensive, quick, and results in a pair of earrings to wear the same day." - Bead & Button

"(The book) features crisp photos that show even the most minute details of the pieces. I especially like the format of these books with their get set, get ready, go instructions. Get set helps you gather all the materials you’ll need for each project. Get ready lists each technique you’ll use during its creation. Go is just that – detailed, step-by-step instruction for making the design. There is a project for every skill set and some to help you stretch outside your comfort zone. Each project is quick and simple enough to complete in a small window of time, so no matter how limited you are, there is always time to create something of beauty. The many techniques shown in this book are sure to get your creative juices flowing so that you can create variations or original designs." - Craft Gossip

This book has great designs, beautiful photos and includes a lot of interesting techniques. The author challenged several designers to design & make these gorgeous earrings in 30 minutes. My reservations are the components are not going to be easy for the 'average' jewelry-maker to find or make and you're going to need a lot of skills and tools. If you are adept with sheet metals (cutting, dapping, filing, folding, annealing, etc.), soldering, patinas, resins and so on, this is a great book for you. There are no pictures of the actual construction process, so you must be quite experienced and read the instructions very carefully. The designs are very creative and can inspire you, but I don't think there's one pair of earrings in the whole book that could easily be made in 30 minutes without a LOT of preparation and practice.

I actually bought this book based on Jean's review, although I remained skeptical. I have a ton of earring books since I'm always looking for new ideas. I skimmed through the pages and was very impressed with all the projects. The book is very well laid out, easy to follow, has a ton more projects than most books that I have seen and they are all great. I intend to make about 75% of the projects in this book very soon; this provides a level of inspiration that I've not seen in any other comparable book.

"Get Ready, Get set, Go!"

review by jean yates

The concept behind this exhilarating, freeing book is that a designer can create something spectacular in just a small amount of "play" time. As Marthe Le Van, who gathered together the forty-five designers, and chose the 60 projects which are offered, says in the introduction, "We invited top designers to break down the barriers that time itself builds up, barriers like self-consciousness,over-analytical thinking, voices whispering "try it a different way", and a hundred other obstacles that can get in the way of pure creativity".

This is how this book came about. The designers were each presented with the challenge to create a pair of earrings ... "flat, and just do it. Let go".

It is apparent from the way the book is laid out that certain skills are required, along with certain tools, for some of the earrings. On the other hand, there are beginner level earrings as well which will require far less in the way of tools and experience. Interestingly enough, I found that it didn't matter which skill level was being presented; each project had a vibrancy to it which followed the initial precept of the 30 minute challenge. You can't make something really quickly and over think it. It is true! Each pair of earrings had a wonderful sort of life and vitality. See for yourself!

Not only that, if a reader were to page through the projects in this sleekly presented book, he or she would note that there is a distinctly cool, modern museum-like feeling to many of the earrings presented. They are truly hip and truly chic. You will want to learn to make them.

This is one of the most inspiring jewelry making books I have ever seen. I'm so glad I got this book.

While there are some beginner projects, many of the projects require metal working skills and tools that a beginner jewelry maker would not have. A beginning metalworker, versus someone who has only done basic bead stringing, could do well with these designs. There are also some designs using metal clays, rather than traditional metalwork.

While some designs call for a rolling mill to pattern metal, the designs could be made with metal patterned in other ways, like etching or hammering. It's not neccessary to have every tool mentioned.

I'm pretty sure that many of these would take ME longer than 30 minutes to make. I intend to put this book on my bench, practice and hone my skill on these designs until I can make them in 30 minutes. I love this book!

The table of contents is pictoral. This makes it very easy to see what page a certain design is on and quickly turn to the instructions.

The photos are clear and close-up. The photos are all of the finished jewelry or a detail of the finished earrings. There are some line drawings of templates. There are no step-by-step photos.

The designs are modern and unique. Just leafing through the book gave me inspiration for many different designs. Several of the designs gave me ideas on ways to improve some of my own designs, even though I use different techniques with my designs.

This book is good for those wanting to take their skills to a new level, and for those seeking inspiration with their own designs.

Great new book on fabricating earrings. Easy to follow instructions. Not the same old designs. Unique and stylish ideas.

I purchased this book to help me get over designers block and to give me some projects to practice with. I had never made earrings before. The simplicity of the styles appealed to me. My productivity is more like 300 minute earrings. That's because I'm still learning and have to solder twice or occasionally 3 times<g>. It's still nice to have the "How'd they do that?" questions finally answered. Gives you a great idea of the order of steps. It even made me pull out the cuttlefish I'd been hoarding for a decade or more. Great book if you have the basics (soldering, filing, sawing) sort of down and want some ready made ideas to practice with.
