Feeling the strain
on January 10, 2011
After three glorious seasons you can really start to see the strain on this show, especially as Jack tries to choose between two beautiful women as the future Mrs. Donaghy. After flirting with Nancy (Julianne Moore) most of the year, it seems he has finally moved in the direction of the younger and more perky Avery (Elizabeth Banks). Liz tries to help him out the best she can, but eventually this is a decision Jack has to make himself.
Alec Baldwin has pretty much taken center stage with Tina Fey pretty much reduced to a supporting role. The writing crew has drifted ever further into the background, with Tracy and Kenneth getting far too much attention as far as I'm concerned. But, I guess that is how the demographics work, at least for the time being. Jenna still holds her own with a number of amusing situations, such as the wonderful episode in which her mom, Verna (played to great comic effect by Jan Hooks), pays a surprise visit. And, the Mother's Day episode is an absolute riot.
Don't get me wrong there are still plenty of laughs to be had, but by season's end you get the feeling this show needs a complete makeover during the off season.
