Book Description

March 15, 2010
From Belgian fruit beers to hoppy cask ales, small-production microbrews to Czech Republic lagers, this is a personal and comprehensive portfolio of international beers compiled by one of the world's leading beer writers. In this unique and beautifully illustrated collection, he has distilled decades of beer knowledge into an entertaining and indispensable guide to the ales that no beer lover should miss. The book divides beers by type, including bitters, best bitters, pilsners, brown and mild ales, pale ales, extra strong beers and bitters, old ales and barley wines, golden ales, porters and stouts, alt and amber ales, fruit beers, and beires de garde, each comprising an alphabetical listing of the beers. Many of the entries are fully illustrated, and each beer comes complete with a box panel for adding your own tasting notes. Information on the country of origin, beer strength, brewery, and a detailed description of the beer and its history are also given.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy IT! January 31, 2010
By Mike
Format:Paperback
I have completed about 150+ of the book (about half). Love the journey so far! Just go in knowing that you will not be able to get quit a few of the beers as either they are not sold in the US or they are discontinued. With that knowledge go forth and have fun discovery drinking!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesomeness! December 9, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is amazing! There are so many great types of beer it will make your head spin. I am slowly working my way through the book one beer at a time and I'm using their grading system to remind myself if the beer was worth buying again. So far, they're all worth buying again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Beer Lovers! August 12, 2011
By TexasEK
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I gave this book, along with 8 beer mugs (also purchased from Amazon) as a birthday gift for a beer-loving friend. She's travelled the world and has always sampled the foreign beers during her travels and didn't recognize many of the beers listed in this book (which was great!).

Needless to say, this book piqued her - and most of my other co-worker's - curiousity and I do believe it has started a "treasure hunt" of sorts to locate some of the more obscure beers mentioned.

This was a top-notch gift and a conversation piece as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Beer Book January 30, 2011
By Ray
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
We like beer and drink good beers whenever possible. This book published by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) in England has steered us to some really good brews. The selections are not restricted to just Europe. There a fair number of US & Canadian beers included in the reviews as well as Mexico, Brazil, Japan and Australia. All of the selections we have tried have lived up to their ratings. If you really like beer - let this be your tour guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beer Lovers! November 13, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book for my 21 year old nephew and he has had a great time trying to track down the various beers listed. This has opened up his world to more than just the domestic beer found at every grocery store. Great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars 300 Beers of Reasonable Quality to Try January 18, 2013
Format:Paperback
Pros: The selection of beers is of reasonable quality, reasonably varied and will give the drinker a decent education in beer upon completion.

Cons: "To Try Before You Die" indicates that these are the best of the best...they aren't. Some are, some are not. There seems to be a heavy bias toward the UK, and a bias toward the US. Several of the selections are there because they were the first, or are an archetype or are so mainstream one could not think to exclude them, but in no means do they belong on someone's "bucket list".

The trivia associated with each beer is ok, sometimes interesting, sometimes not. I suspect that you could put together your own list of 300 good beers of wide variety based on reviewing blogs and web pages on the history of brewing. For people who just want to pick up a book and don't want to do any research on their own, this book will serve just fine.

My qualifications for rating this book: My personal database extends to 1216 different beers at the moment. I've sampled approximately a third to half the beers Protz lists. Many of the British beers were sampled when I lived there.
