Loud & Good Sound Quality, September 6, 2011
This review is from: R/T 300 Enclosure Series (318-10) - Single 10" Slot Vented Sub Bass Hatchback Speaker Box with Labyrinth Power Port - MTX (Electronics)
I bought this Obcon box to replace an older sealed box with two 10" MTX subwoofers. I was afraid that going from two subs to just one would be a big drop in output, but it turns out that wasn't the case. This ported box has a ton of output - so much that I sometimes think this single ported box has a tad more DBs than my old dual sealed box. I was also afraid that sound quality would suffer since sealed boxes tend to be regarded as having an edge over ported boxes, especially in the lowest octaves. But again, this ported Obcon box surprised me with it's smooth output and impressive low-bass extension. The sound signature is definitely more West Coast with bumped up output and a longer sustain. I like the change, however, and I don't miss the arguably tighter output of the sealed enclosure at all. I'm not sure what the exact porting frequency is, but it must be pretty low because I still get good output down to the lowest octaves. I've even tried test tone sweeps and gotten usable output down to about 30 Hz. That's damn impressive for a single 10" sub.
PROS:
- Very high output
- Cutout fits beefy cast basket with no problems
- No noticeable port noise of "chuffing"
- Excellent built quality with 3/5" MDF, dado lock joints, and sealed seams
- Nice smooth sound quality with no artificial mid-bass peak
CONS:
- No speaker wire, instructions, or mounting screws included
- Binding posts are tricky to use with large-gauge wire
- Plastic binding posts not as nice as all-metal versions
- No sound insulation stuffing included (I know you're not normally supposed to use stuffing for ported enclosures, but I do anyway. I put a little bit towards the back to help damp resonances and I've always gotten good results that way.)

great cabinet and a very good price, April 10, 2010
This review is from: R/T 300 Enclosure Series (318-10) - Single 10" Slot Vented Sub Bass Hatchback Speaker Box with Labyrinth Power Port - MTX (Electronics)
I am using this enclosure to house a Boston Acoustics 10" subwoofer matched with a 300 Watt RMS Alpine mono sub amp...the speaker itself weighs in at over 18 pounds....a very good match for this speaker enclosure.
This enclosure is extremely well built and solid...and heavy...very high quality formed wood....the port is exceptional...giving a very smooth depth that is warm and comparable to home speakers.....it is capable of easily achieving loud volume levels...the kick drum and toms come thru very realistic...with a 15" depth....this box will accomodate just about anything you want to pop in it....and the inside dimentions of the speaker chamber are one cubic foot...very compact
on the downside....you will need wood screws to mount the speaker and wiring inside to hooke up the speaker to the rear terminals..which are pretty good quality.
all in all....an oustanding cabinet and a great deal for the price......
