This is a wonderful reference book for the first time papermaker! The techniques are simple and the resource directory is helpful in finding those hard-to-get supplies. Though at first the whole process might seem alittle overwhelming, if you follow the recipes, you will always come out with a georgous paper. I highly recommend this book to the beginner and those who have been at it for awhile.

Before getting this book I felt like there was just one way to make paper - buy the cotton pulp from the craft store, add some flowers or dye. This book really opened me up the possibilities. I think what first got my attention was when the authors wrote that you can use almost anything for pulp including brown paper gags, garden plants etc. I also love how there are ideas on adding texture - I would never have thought to use lace and string to emboss the paper or woven placemats to add texture. The pictures and instructions are all very clear. I was pretty new to paper making prior to buying this book - basically just relying on the instructions from my deckle but this really is a cool recipe book. Recipes are about 8 to each two-page spread and are very straightforward - e.g. 1 cup of lime pulp, 2 tsp metallic confetti followed by a paragraph on how best to mix the ingredients and what to expect. Large pictures of the resulting paper is shown too. The recipes are broken out into subjects such as textures with households items, fabric embossing, pouring and embedding, recycled pulps (using junk mail, construction paper), pigments (using tissue and food coloring) etc. Really a wealth of ideas are packed into this book. I love it.

I recently purchased this book, and had considered (sorry Amazon)
sending it back, since it wasn't at all what I'd been looking for. However, after Reading it through, and enjoying the Beautiful Illustrations I decided to keep it. As a practical guide, it is definately well suited for the person wanting to try their hand at paper making, and having no previous experiance
at all. It is not a good guide for the intermediate paper maker, or for those looking for detailed information regarding the construction of paper making equipment, or the use of more advanced techniques. A good guide for beginning hobbyists...and a lovely, addition to the bookshelf.
