My Favorite Slow Cooker Cookbook,
This review is from: 300 Slow Cooker Favorites (Paperback)
I am a cooking/food writer, and I love to read cookbooks. Yes. I really do read them as well as use them.
This is the best crock pot cookbook I've ever owned. These are real recipes for real people. There are old favorites (but with helpful tips) as well as new dishes that still don't require multiple trips to the grocery store and hours stirring and doing other things to the crock pot that make it more bother than help. Donna-Marie covers everything from making roasted nuts in the crock pot to cheese cake. Her directions and details are excellent, so it's really hard to mess up one of her dishes. As the title suggests, there are 300 recipes here. It's not just the same thing over and over either. I made the cheese potatoes last night. Excellent. This book will keep me busy for a long time. I marked pages of ones that I can't wait to try. All the ones I have tried were fabulous. I have a bunch of crock pot cookbooks, but this one is, by far, the best.

I am a cook book junkie and this one is high on my list. Great recipes! It has been in my kitchen being actively used since I got it. I would have given it a 5 star rating if it had a few more pictures but other than that definitely one worth buying!

This cookbook beats others I own because it's more natural...no more canned soup recipes. The ingredients enable one to regulate the amount of salt and sugar. Crock pot cooking is a great idea but you still have to do some preparation and that's not always easy in the morning. This book has simple recipes with few extra ingredients. I was able to "try" it before purchase because both my sister and son were using it.

This is my family's favourite slow cooker cookbook. My husband is an especially picky eater, but he (so far) has enjoyed every recipes I've made from this book. We've tried at least 6 or 7 recipes, and every one has been delicious. I always turn to this cookbook when I want to use my slow cooker. Definitely recommended!

Recently got a slow cooker and needed some good recipes to experiment with. Bought this cookbook and I am very happy with it. I have made several recipes and have to admit, I have been delighted by all of them, including my hard to please husband. Easy to follow recipes, great tips, and nice pictures too.

THIS BOOK IS REDONKULOUS.,

This review is from: 300 Slow Cooker Favorites (Paperback)
My mother gave me her ancient slow cooker a couple of months ago, confident that I would use it much more that she ever could (she knows that I'm a devoted happy housewife who loves to cook). I was very hesistant to have one of these big ceramic monsters taking up space in my tiny condo, the only thing I could think of cooking in this would be some weiners and maybe a stew or two...NOT WITH THIS BOOK IN HAND. Dammit, I use my slow cooker so much that it actually sits on my COUNTER.
At least 80% of the recipes have come from this book, the rest are from Fix-It n Forget-It and some recipes that my mother passed on to me.The recipes in THIS book, though, are super easy but the result is very good. Most of the ingredients are things you have in your house if you're a home cook. You can control some of the ingredients to your tasting and nutritional preference (just be mindful of the liquids!). The author gives some tips on using a slow cooker, then follows into some meal suggestions for entertaining before entering into her world of slow-cooked deliciousness. My only tiny, tiny complaint is that I wish it would list nutritional information, but most of the recipes use such fresh ingredients that I can't think to take a star out for that. I'll list some of my favorite recipes: Chicken Stew with Rosemary Dumplings - This was the first one I made from the book, and it stays a favorite because even though I messed it up on my end (the dumplings broke apart because of a mismeasurement) it was a huge hit. I made them again fully following the directions and it was perfect. It also reheats really well. Chicken Cacciatore - great dish with pasta, the recipe asks for chicken thighs but I used boneless chicken breast and it came out delicious. Turkey Mushroom Loaf - This one is probably my absolute favorite to make. It's really easy, and it comes out looking gorgeous and tasting like something from a restaurant. With some mashed potatoes, you can't go wrong. The second time around I replaced some of the ground turkey with some veal and pork just to vary it, worked out. Chicken and Black Bean Chili in Tortilla Bowls - Fabulous dish for a small casual dinner party. Doesn't it even just SOUND freaking delicious...tortilla bowls for pete's sake! Burgundy Beef and Wild Mushroom Stew - the 'dark horse' stew of my house, I love how simple and rich the flavors result. Another great reheater. I can't list all the ones I've made or even want to make in the future. This book is a must have and is used VERY often in my house. VERY OFTEN.

I was so disappointed in this cookbook. I have dozens of slow cooker recipe books like this one - open a can of cream of mushroom soup, a jar of salsa, a jar of spaghetti sauce or a bottle of this, that or the other. I was expecting some new and fresh ideas. So, if that is what you are looking for, new and fresh ideas, this is NOT the cookbook that you're looking for. Just the same old tired roast with a can of mushroom soup over the top. I MIGHT be able to use three or four recipes but otherwise...............it's a waste of money and time.

Too Many Ingredients,

This cookbook makes the same mistake as many newer books--the print is just too faint--attractive rather than functional. Especially when cooking, having the quantity and ingredients in the darkest print are most important--these are a light gray, but with words such as the name of recipe, Serves 8, or Tips in bold. Next, most of the recipes require too many ingredients such as 13 ingredients to make Polynesian Chicken, 15 for Lumberjack Ribs, or 12 to make Good Morning Granola. Speaking of the Granola, recipe calls for cooking on High for 3 hours STIRRING EVERY 30 MINUTES, then cooking on Low for an additional 4 hours or so. In the Pork and Lamb section, 19 recipes for Pork but only 4 for Lamb. Gave it 2 stars: one for the sheer number of recipes (over 300 pages) and the handy size which lies relatively flat for ease in following the directions.
