This review is from: 3000 Miles: Gumball 3000 (DVD)
The Gumball 3000 is like a real-life Cannonball Run, but without the guaranteed laughs of a fat Dom DeLuise. Instead, the documentarians--who do their best to find some drama wherever they can to stretch this to feature length--are oftentimes left with nothing but "Viva La Bam" stars Ryan Dunn and Bam Margera complaining about how long they've been driving, how annoying the crowds are, or getting lost. A racing SUV packing skating legend Tony Hawk, skating pro Mike Vallely, and BMX pro Mike Escamilla is the less whiny, down-to-earth team the filmmakers follow. This trio wind up hunting for Dunn and Margera when that head-up-their-butts duo gets lost or breaks down in Bam's abused purple Lamborghini.
That trio also gives the filmmakers a chance to show off the X Games-worthy skateboarding and BMX-ing skills that these amateur globe-trotting racers bring--in Europe, in Vegas, in Salt Lake City. Those who aren't already into "Viva La Bam," "Jackass," and skateboarding can skip this. But those who wind up watching this over-long film will be rewarded with a top-notch 1960s-style score by Roxbury, split-screen camera tricks straight out of a Bond film, and looks at 120 of the most beautiful cars ever to race through Europe, Thailand, and America.

This review is from: 3000 Miles: Gumball 3000 (DVD)
This DVD is perfect for a Bam Margera/Ryan Dunn/Tony Hawk fan. It has all of them in it while they race across the country. There is a lot of Ryan Dunn and Bam Margera complaining on how long they have been driving, how annoying the crowds are, or simply getting lost. Tony Hawk, Mike Vallely, and Mike Escamilla are less whiny, and down to earth. They wind up trying to find Dunn and Margera when they get lost or break down in Bam's purple Lamborghini. This also shows off the X Games and the skills that they have. Those who aren't already into "Viva La Bam," "Jackass," and skateboarding can skip this, but those who love it will enjoy it, I know I did.

3000 miles is a decent documentary about a select few individuals rallying in their expensive cars throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. As a car fanatic, this film particularly caught my interests within a heartbeat but the further I found myself into the movie, the less excited I became about driving or racing altogether. So what went wrong? Why, the very same five individuals that the movie is about. That's right, this DVD happens to be less about cars and more about the celebrities driving them. In fact, there were several segments in the documentary committed to the celebrities themselves - such as skateboarding, BMXing, or silly stunts not even involving a car. Though, I'd be lying if I said there weren't a few decent segments about the cars themselves as well - which there were. However, I as well as many of you, bought this film for the cars and the cars only. Everything else is bonus material which unfortunately is exactly what this movie revolves around. The main reason behind this is that Tony Hawk and Bam Margera sell Gumball 3000 DVDs better then Gumball 3000 sells Gumball 3000 DVDs.
For the time being, let's ignore those celebrities for a bit and discuss what Gumball is really about - long distance, high performance car rallying. Was it there? YES. Was there drama involved? You bet. Is it an accurate description of what to expect if I entered a Gumball rally? Guaranteed. The documentary in itself however is made extremely average. The music is extremely basic and did not fit the category of high speeding cars. The editing could have been a significantly better and more footage could have been shown especially something as long as 3000 miles worth of rallying. With that being said, I still enjoyed it despite such obvious flaws only due to the comedic aspects that tipped the scales for me such as various police run-in situations. It's an extremely unique movie that holds an entire category to itself filled with drama, humor, and moments that make you smile and drool. Though I think I enjoyed the Jackass Gumball 3000 Special which was moreover about Gumball then Jackass (ironically).
