Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

DAW owners/editors Elizabeth R. Wollheim and Sheila E. Gilbert gather together their bullpen's heavy hitters in two celebratory volumes, the DAW 30th Anniversary Science Fiction Anthology (DAW, $24.95 464p ISBN 0-7564-0064-3) and the DAW 30th Anniversary Fantasy Anthology ($24.95 432p -0070-8). With the former boasting 19 stories by the likes of Robert Sheckley, C.J. Cherryh and Kate Elliot, and the latter offering 18 tales by writers such as Michael Shea, Ian Watson and Michelle West, the only misstep in these excellent line-ups is that the DAW grande dames gave both tomes virtually identical introductions.

From Library Journal

To celebrate DAW Books's 30 years of publishing in the sf and fantasy genres, Wollheim and Gilbert have assembled these volumes that feature authors who have published under the DAW banner and whose works have made significant contributions to the field of imaginative literature. An essay by the editors (repeated in both volumes) relates the history of DAW and its founders, Donald and Elsie Wollheim, while individual author or editor commentaries introduce many of the stories. The fantasy collection includes a variety of stories, including Mercedes Lackey's expression of an author's worst nightmare ("After Midnight") and Christopher Stasheff's melancholy parable of a wizard's journey of bitter self-discovery ("Coronach of the Bell"). Contributions by other notable fantasy writers such as Tanith Lee, Melanie Rawn, and Lynn Abbey round out this collection of 18 tales. The sf anthology collects a stellar group of stories, including Brian Aldiss's cautionary tale of a space-faring warship whose passage results in the death of civilizations ("Aboard the Beatitude") and Tad Williams's wry recounting of the chat room at the end of the world ("Not with a Whimper, Either"). Stories by authors including Frederik Pohl, Timothy Zahn, and Kate Elliott are also among the 19 selections in this well-balanced volume. Together or separately, both books are recommended for most libraries.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not A Lot Worth Celebrating, Apparently, May 12, 2004

This review is from: DAW 30th Anniversary Science Fiction Antholgy (Mass Market Paperback)
I own hundreds of science fiction and fantasy books, yet only two (Timothy Zahn's Blackcollar books) are published by Daw. Now I know that's probably not a coincidence. This collection is supposed to be a celebration of Daw's 30th anniversary, yet none of the stories are standouts and several, including Zahn's and Frederik Pohl's, seem to have "phoned in." Even C.J. Cherryh's contribution disappoints. Of course, there is no such thing as a perfect anthology, but if you want some provocative sci-fi pick up Universe 1 edited by Robert Silverberg instead of this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent SF anthology, May 11, 2002
Over thirty years Donald A. Wollheim had a vision of a home for speculative fiction writers and fans so he created Daw. Over the next three decades, Daw has published some of the best fantasy and science fiction works in the business. If this review sounds like déjà vu, it is because this collection easily matches the high quality bar of its sister anthology, 30TH ANNIVERSARY DAW FANTASY. This collection, 30TH ANNIVERSARY DAW SCIENCE FICTION, also provides strong stories that run the gamut of the genre from some of the more renowned writers to the future stars. Once again, the stories pay homage to the company, but the contributors including the editors pay deference to the deceased founding father. Each tale is new, but more important, it is well written as if each writer understood who they really honor with this collection. Fans of science fiction will enjoy the tales, but also the short introductory blurb that each author adds about Mr. Wollheim. Great short storybook worth reading as much as its fantasy companion.

3.0 out of 5 stars So So, June 29, 2004
This definitely wasn't as good as the collection of fantasy book that they put out. Some of these stories were so boring I thought I'd fall asleep. I would recommend the fantasy collection, not the science fiction.
