5.0 out of 5 stars '31 Minutes' Is Better Than His Mixtapes!
I'm not a new Mike Posner fan. I've been a fan of his before his mixtapes came out. I feel that his "true" fans are complaining way to much about this new album. "31 Minutes to Takeoff," for me, was a little bit shocking. I expected this album to have more up-tempo songs on it, but, was a thoroughly disappointed? No.
This album is a really good Pop/R&B album. Songs,...

This album is a really good Pop/R&B album. Songs, especially like "Bow Chicka Wow Wow," "Please Don't Go," "Synthesizer," "Save Your Goodbye," and "Delta 1406," definitely show off how much of a creative genius Mike is.
Also, I love his voice. It's so distinct and different.
Mike is awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bumpin beats and smooth lyrics, October 30, 2010
This review is from: 31 Minutes to Takeoff (Audio CD)
Granted I dont know any of Mike's old stuff, so this is my first cd. I have to say I have listened to it from start to finish several times and like it even more and more. I find it to be a great fussion of R&B and Pop. I think the beats are popping, the smooth lyrical licks yeah maybe overly synthesized but fresh. From 'Please Don't Go' to 'Delta 1406' I enjoyed the over all sexy cool vibe. I love the funky soulful explosion of 'Do U Wanna.' And...even the haters have to admit 'Deja Vu' def was a refreshing up take of an acapella performance. If you like his smash hit 'Cooler Then Me', you should really be feeling this album. If you dig this cd also check out Taio CruzRokstarr and Jason DeruloJason Derulo both solid albums

I love this album!

Mike definitely shows the music industry that he's not just another artist from a "mixtape" success.

FAVORITE SONGS: Bow Chicka Wow Wow, Please Don't Go, Cooler Than Me (Single Version), Save Your Goodbye, Synthesizer, Delta 1406

I definitely recommend this album to people who like great music. You'll love this CD!

3.0 out of 5 stars He's Still a Feature (Only) Artist for Now, August 11, 2010
By
This review is from: 31 Minutes to Takeoff (Audio CD)
Mike Posner has been around the mixtape circuit for a while now. He's one of those artists that will become familiar to you by his distinct voice. It's surprising he hasn't been featured on many official albums rather than simply mixtapes, yet I am sure he will become a normal staple in the hip-hop world soon - landing on official singles for some of the new artists (Big Sean, Kid Cudi, etc.) As a featured artist, Mike Posner is above average. He brings a lot to a hook and a bridge, however, when taking the entire spotlight? He falls a bit flat.

3/5 - "31 Minutes to Take Off" - This track is just an intro, but a lyrically it will display the direction Posner takes on his official debut. He's out for revenge - taking on his critics and naysayers of the past.

4/5 - "Please Don't Go" - The second track on the album brings a bit of energy to the album. To say that Mike Posner is an R&B artist is maybe stretching it a bit. This track proves that he does have R&B flavor though, but has a lot of hip-hop influence intertwined with the said flavor. This seems to be a track that is single material. It's catchy, ubeat and has a beat which is enjoyable to listen to. The last bit of the song, Posner experiments a bit with the beat, which seems to bring a bit of a fresh flavor to the (potential) radio hit.

2/5 - "Bow Chicka Wow Wow" - Now, by hearing the title of this track I immediately figured it would be an interlude of comic standard. However, it is an actual song directed toward the ladies. It's Posner's attempt at swooing a girl. With lyrics touching on "no more waiting." The chorus is weak and the lyrics are even more frail. It's a song that has no appeal for males and even females, I would have to believe, would skip to the next song.

4/5 - "Cooler Than Me" - This is a track that is aimed directly at a woman who felt the need to reject Posner in his past life. Now that he is a celebrity he flaunts his swagger and hype her way, only to reject her this time around. It's a classic "look at me now" record. It does it's job. This is the first official single from the album and has garnered radio play for sometime now.

3/5 - "Deja Vu" - Another track directed towards the ladies, but with more radio appeal than the previous track. This one is a bit more upbeat. The lyrics touch on having the lady come over and so "we can have deja vu." Again, the lyrics and choruses leave more to be desired.

4/5 - "Do U Wanna?" - This is the first track that I felt was complete. It has a bit of old school, soul flavor within it. The beat is contagious and his lyrics remind anyone of an old classic song our parents grew up listening to. It's simple, yet feels more complete then previous tracks of his.

3/5 - "Cheated" - "I should have cheated on you/Nobody told me I was dating a whore." Those are lines from this track. The direction of this song is appealing because most everyone has experienced some sort of similar betrayal from a girl or woman sometime within their lives. It's a song which is blatant and doesn't leave much to the imagination, yet he is successful in his attempt to be clever. It even calls out the girl by name which this song is directed toward.

4/5 - "Gone In September" - This track is about a summer fling. It's a great track that mixes a feel good beat with no so good intentions. The bridge explains "when I told you you were pretty I was just trying to score." He's honest and direct, yet again, it works here on this track. One of my favorites from the album.

3/5 - "Save Your Goodbye" - This seems to be a track involving a break up and the aftermath of the discussion an awkward goodbye brings. Posner falls victim to a woman's ill will. The track is a good track - nothing unbelievable, yet is worth a listen for sure.

3/5 - "Synthesizer" - This is a track almost written to himself. It's an attempt to change the subject matter from girls, girls, girls to self motivation and direction. It still involves "getting the Princess," but has more to do with self awareness. It's a good change of subject matter. It's a good track.

4/5 - "Delta 1406" - A quiet and mellow track which reflects on Posner's stardom and celebrity. It's a track that touches on his personal issues with family and his inability to even stay at his own mother's house. It seems every debut album seems to have a track dedicated to fame and this is Posner's. It's a great track - even though it is short.

3/5 - "Falling" - This is another track dedicated to ill dealings with woman of his past. It doesn't change up the energy of the album any, but ends the record abruptly. It seems as if a more upbeat track would have been better to leave the listener with - rather than another similar track about getting back at women of the past and falling from fame. At any rate, it's a good track in itself.

With only 12 tracks it seems as if there is more to be desired. When first hearing about Mike Posner having a debut album being released I did think that there would be a lot of MCs features on the album. But there aren't. He takes the full spotlight and I think it hurts the album. His voice is distinct, but an entire album of it might be a little too much. It would have helped him to have some tracks that mix his talents with hip-hop artists. He has enough friends in the industry to make this happen.

All in all, it's a very short (even short songs) album. It doesn't seem complete. And there are not enough outstanding songs to merit purchasing the entire album if you have never heard anything from him. My suggestion is to find his mixtape "One Foot Out the Door" and give it a listen to see if he is for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing, August 11, 2010
This review is from: 31 Minutes to Takeoff (Audio CD)
I completely hate this album and could not have been more disappointed. I literally don't like 1 song. (besides cooler than me, which is only on the album for show, its not new).

Listening to this album to me would be like being 12 years old on Christmas Day in 2011 and getting a sega genesis instead of a Playstation 3.

What's amazing is, I love every song he has ever made BEFORE this album. I constantly listen to his mixtapes and think they are amazing.

This album is absolute trash and everyone around the internet thinks so. The only people that think this album is good are those who love Mike Posner so much that they're in complete denial.

bow chicka wow wow may legitimately be the worst song I have ever heard. I was so excited for his album and I can't even believe how bad it is. He sounds nothing like his mixtapes. Why is his style so completely different?

I love you Mike Posner, please return to your old style. This album is completely whack man.

Songs I think that are better than ANYTHING on this album (in no order)
speed of sound, hey cupid, who knows, smoke n' drive, his halo cover, and MANY more just off the top of my head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Posner's Major Label Debut Is Pure Pop Brilliance, August 10, 2010
This review is from: 31 Minutes to Takeoff (Audio CD)
Mike Posner could quite possibly be the most brilliant pop artist to come out since Lady Gaga - & he deserves to be just as huge. While often pinned as a hip hop artist, Posner is anything but. Firmly placed in electronic music, often using live instruments, Posner is that rare eclectic artist that is able to fuse genres together seamlessly - but he never once raps. His voice is as unique as his sound. Vocally, it could be said he's rougher version of Justin Timberlake, minus the vocal tricks. Musically, he bounces from electronic dance to a thumping club track to a fully live band and back again. Posner's lyrical abilities are nothing short of amazing. Clever, introspective and raw, he never holds back from what he wants to say. After signing with J Records while enrolled at Duke University, Posner began recording the album while finishing out his double major. From those recordings comes his major label debut "31 Minutes To Takeoff". The albums is one of the most instantly addicting albums I've heard in quite some time. It's easy to over look the catchy songs and driving beats and not see the depth that's contained within the lyrics of these twelve tracks - but do yourself a favor and listen. It only takes one to truly listen to the lyrics to see the talent that this new artist possesses. This is one album you don't want to miss. And this is one artist that deserves to be huge.

1. 31 Minutes To Takeoff - A short intro. "Do you recall I told you, this was just a matter of time?" This is the very first line of the first song on his first major release. This intro song gives a clear indication of what type of journey this record will take us on.

2. Please Don't Go - A very low-key dance club song, "Please Don't Go" is someone pleading to their lover to stay. Soaring vocals on the hooks in the chorus really shoot this song into the stratosphere. An excellent way to kick off the record.

3. Bow Chika Bow Wow - Slowing it up a bit on the second song, Posner tries to convince a girl to have a little fun with him after hours. This track is very strong instrumentally, literally relying on an electric guitar lick for the end of the chorus. This is one the ladies will love & the guys will be trying to play it for them.

4. Cooler Than Me - Posners break out single has been almost inescapable this summer, and it deserves it. This track is absolutely brilliant. With an arpeggiated throbbing bassline, and a driving beat this makes you want to dance. The lyrics are pure genius and Posners delivery couldn't be better. From the track to the lyrics to the background vocals, this is by far one of the best (& smartest) singles to come out in quite some time.

5. Deja Vu - Posner talks about reconnecting with a former lover. With Boyz II Men providing background vocals, you can imagine the sound of this song. A very slick update of smooth R&B with some electronic elements thrown in.

6. Do U Wanna? - A very choppy beat drives this song about trying to sweep a girl into the sheets. The chorus explodes with a 60's Motown sound and takes you along for the ride.

7. Cheated - "I should have cheated on you" carries the chorus and the song on this track about, well, cheating. Posner directs this song squarely at the one who broke his heart by cheating on him. In fact, Posner puts her full name right out there, in case there were any females were wondering if it were about them. This slinky, dance song is pure pop perfection.

8. Gone In September - This song is a guitar strumming pop rock song about leaving a girl behind after he graduates college. Posner realizes he's a guy through and through after using a girl and telling her what he wants to hear, knowing he won't be around.

9. Save Your Goodbye - This tracks starts out sparse and slowly builds to the choruses with a dance oriented track, before swelling up in the choruses. Posner speaks about a lover that continues to haunt him, even after the relationship. This track could have been on Justin Timberlake'sFutureSex / LoveSounds album.

10. Synthesizer - A very contemplative song that seems to be Posner speaking to himself about a future of fame, money and changing the world - and not forgetting where you came from and those that love you. A very raw and emotional song.

11. Delta 1406 - A slow, sparse, atmospheric song that seems to be another song based on self reflection. Almost stream of consciousness, this seems to be Posner at his most emotionally bare, truly exposing himself to the person he is. This isn't something that you'll ever hear on the radio, but that's not why this was written.

12. Falling - The final track on the album picks up the pace, but not by much. This song is directly aimed at the girl that broke his heart. A great way to end the album. "Drive your high heel into my heart...I don't even care."

This is one artist we'll be watching for years to come. Best to jump on the wagon now & take the ride with him!
