My first battery load tester and I like it so far. It's clear and precise with the voltage, load and charging readings.

The only problem is that I feel that the cables are far too short as you have to bend downwards with the tester when it's connected to the car battery for testing.

One last thing, do not touch the back part of this testing when you're doing a load test. It get's freaking hot! It get's so hard that one might get 2nd degree burns if you aren't too careful.

I have used this tester twice now and it seems to function well. I agree with some reviewers that perhaps the cable length could be slightly longer, but I had no problem attaching them to the battery terminals. Be aware that the unit gets hot at the back, where it is vented, as it draws current during the test. I only drive my car every other week or so and only for a few miles, so I am constantly having to trickle charge my battery. This at least gives me an idea of its state of charge. I note that it can also be used to test the charging system but I have not tried that feature as yet.

The tester work very good. It save me from buying six new batteries. I have a golf cart that has 6 batteries. The shop tried to sell me a new set of batteries. After checking with the otc 3181 tester I found that the batteries were not bad. I located a bad connection. After repairing the connection my batteries charged fully. I am very satisfied with otc 3181.

Easy to use and seems to work well. It appears to be a very well made tool. Seems heavy duty as the title says. If stored in a dry/safe place, see no reason why this wouldn't last for many years to come. The results it said, was verified with my multi-meter and my bosses "LED only" battery testing multi-meter.

Only negative thing is it don't give you the approximate CCA of a battery. (as the ones at the Walmart garage do). It basically takes off the surface charge of the battery (by running a built in heater), then you measure the output of the battery. Then you start the car/truck, and see if the charger is adding the correct amount of charge to the battery.

But since it don't say it gives you the CCA in the description, not taking off any stars. It does what it says it will do, and seems very well made.

This load-portion works fine... but the needle reads a few volts below what it should read. I've used the circle "zero-er" to try to calibrate it but it still doesn't read correctly. Used several other devices to verify this one was the one mis-calibrated. The "zero-er" doesn't even have full range of calibration (it goes up about 2 volts and down about 2 volts, but won't calibrate any further). I'm disappointed, but since the load-test function still works (have to just pretend it is reading 2 volts higher) I'm not going to bother with returning it.

I got this today and put it to use right away. I was suspicious of the batteries in my truck, turns out one of them is for the most part dead, so I will be replacing them both. I tested some other batteries I had laying around too. The tool was getting hot after two test, so be sure to let it cool down between test. It getting warm is not a product deficiency, it just that way it works, no way around it, all load testers will produce heat. While it is made in Chain its has a very well made feel to it. For a size reference the clamps are full size jumper cable size clamps, so you have an idea of how big the tool really is in the picture. The size is not a bad thing though, at least you know you are not getting a Mickey Mouse tester. The cardboard box it comes in is hefty enough to make a good storage box for the user that wont use it very often. What I thought was odd is they didn't use single conductor wire for the cables, its three conductors. All three conductors are connected to the clamps and they don't seem to get hot, so I guess its fine. I can only reason they did this to save money and/or keep the cables flexible.

The reason I found for hooking it up the way the instructions say to, which is negative on first, and off last, is that if you don't then the needle will peg toward zero. Over time this could mess up the accuracy of it, however there is a zero adjust to help fix that should it ever occur.
