This book deals with the SuperH, the high-performance RISC-system microcomputers for embedded applications. Their performance is the same as that of a 32-bit microcomputer or a game machine - or rather, they are the microcomputers that are actually used. There is no predetermined system or board as in a personal computer. Knowledge of the hardware, at least, is necessary to use it. It is also necessary to create a board. But looking at it from a different angle, the SuperH is a microcomputer that makes it possible to be used in an unrestricted environment and configure a system that gives free rein to one's ideas. The SuperH includes single-chip products that can be used with simple hardware, and also products capable of running Linux, Windows CE, and OS-9. The power consumption of most models is no more than 500 mW, a level appropriate for the use of a plastic package, allowing extended operation on battery power.
This book has been edited for use as an introductory guide to the basics of using the SuperH. Numerous explanations of basic points have been included so that the SuperH can also be applied to products which will be developed in the future.
