Beware of LG,
By D. Dell "Dell" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 32LC7D 32" LCD TV (Electronics)
I bought one LG 42 inch plus several 26 inch and 32 inch LCD TVs for my business including the model listed above. Six of them went out in less than 2 weeks. That works out to a 33 percent failure rate which is totally unacceptable. It shows a complete lack of quality control. Even though the problems were all different from each other, the repairman said it was the main board on the 4 TVs he is working on. He has not started work on the other two yet. Then, of course, the part is on back order. At this rate I estimate that as many as 70 to 80 percent could fail in just a few months.
I also found out that LG put out a bulletin about these problems on some of their models before I even ordered these TVs. This clearly shows that LG knew they were selling defective TVs, but sold them anyway. Sure, it does have a nice and bright picture, but are you willing to take a chance considering the odds? Would you trust a company that knowingly sells defective products? Are you sure that you want that LG TV? This is not the only problems I have had with LG. I also have a washer that has been repaired twice. Then there was the cell phone that promptly went out and I got rid of it. Apparently LG is not a reliable brand, especially their TVs, and should be avoided.

I was going to buy a new LCD monitor to replace my regular computer monitor and seven year old 27" CRT.
I ultimately chose the LG monitor as they make their own panels and the display looked sharp. The contrast ratio being 8000:1 (compared to another high quality brand whose ratio was 7000:1) was the biggest selling point. Now for the tests. On my old computer monitor, playing DVDs or video games, the brightness was always consistent. On the LG unit, there is a bizarre backlight flicker depending on how much detail is on screen. This I tested and proved by running a DVD player in windowed mode, covering about 40% of the screen. It is also repeatable if I use this as a standalone TV, but the effect isn't as pronounced. I get the impression the TV is proactively deciding how bright the backlight should be lit. This is disconcerting, so I wouldn't recommend using this device as a substitute for a computer monitor. As for backlight bleed, it's well contained - only a little on the bottom. Watching 4:3 movies in standard resolution (the vertical black bands on the sides) look dark gray. But noting this monitor, as the Samsung, were blacker than any of the competing monitors, I'd hate to think how badly a lower cost display would look. One amusing aspect ratio I found is called 'horizon'. This runs the monitor in 16:9 mode, but pinches the display inward - this allows old 4:3 programs to look fairly normal in a stretched environment. Viewing 4:3 pan and scan shows, the whole display is filled but objects toward the center (where one's eyes tend to roam) looks normal and not stretched. I used the same 3' Component cables (R/G/B) that I used on the CRT monitor. The signal is strong. But problems I never fathomed due to CRT's low resolution show up big-time on this monitor. That just goes to show how well technology has advanced. For the most part. LCDs (and plasma) both have more difficulty with blacks than CRT monitors. However, the pros (wide screen, thin, light, use less energy, produce less heat) are viable trade-offs. It's still going to take some time to get used to the changes in technologies, but by and large they're all good changes. All in all, I think this is a good unit. Very vibrant (it put my HP LCD monitor to shame, and it is rated 1000:1) and is so sharp it shows off every compression artifact on a DVD. LG will give Samsung a run for their money...

Disappointed,
This review is from: 32LC7D 32" LCD TV (Electronics)
I first bought my 32" LG in August. I had had it for 13 days when it turned itself off and never came back on. I took it to the store and they gave me a new one. It is now October and today it began to switch itself from tv to dvd mode. It then went to one channel on the tv and stayed there. I changed the remote batteries. I tried to change the channel, volume, menu and nothing worked. I then tried to use the tv buttons and nothing. It would only come on and off and stayed on one channel. It then turned itself off and hasnt come back on. I am returning this one tomorrow. I now see that others are having this problem and it frustrates me that it hasnt been fixed before selling more. This has ruined me with this company.

I bought this TV on a Saturday and the power supply died on Sunday. The store exchanged it and the second one worked for 41 days before the power supply died. Clearly this is not a quality product.
Although LG insists that it will be repaired under the 1 year warranty, it's been broken for 34 days now. Remember that it only worked for 41 days. Buy another brand and save a huge headache.

As good or better than Sony and Samsung,

Picked this up after staring at it side by side with the sony and samsung equivalents and the picture was the best.
No problems at all, great clean and bright picture, good sound and nice remote. Goes great with your HDTV DVR receiver and the dozens of new HD channels coming online with DirectTv now. Got the 3 year warranty for 100 dollars which covers everything from pixel burnouts to the tv catching fire. Anybody that doesn't get a warranty and then whines about something going wrong has it coming to them. Regardless of brand, LCD T.V.s are known for having a high problem rate. They are a relatively new technology still.

No problems at all- excellent TV... especially for standard def (SD),

I picked up this TV from CompUSA back in May for $800. Added a 4 year warantee extension for $130 more. So far so good: 0 problems with the TV, the quality is excellent- on par w/ the latest-and-greatest Samsung equivalents (both TV lines are from S. Korea). Sound is also satisfactory.
My wife is extremely picky when it comes to getting a LCD TV due to the fear of pixelation on fast-motion video, graininess and poor quality of upconverting SD signals, and color range from our old traditional set. This LCD TV exhibits none of these problems. She has been very pleased w/ this purchase- SD signals are up-converted to almost HD equivalents- sometimes even better than what the local over-the-air stations are doing w/ their older media (TV shows, movies they have pre-HD). I believe their "XD" noise-reduction has something to do with this. It saves $$$ on cable from having to pay extra for the HD content. The only thing that would have been nice to have is a dual RF coax inputs to allow both a HD OTA antenna and a SD cable input since this TV excels w/ SD. This can be remedied w/ an after-market diplexer (signal combiner).

LG 47 LCD 47LD450,

Ordered from Amazing Deals Online. Received LCD tv in 1 week. (gave away old tv). Now almost exactly 22 hours later after using this TV the screen started to flicker and pop, then a loud hissing from the back and the screen FAILED. Now, no TV just audio, and I have heard that LG has a 5% failure rate. That is 1 tv out of every 20 will FAIL within 1 year. 1 out of every 20 people will have a broken TV, without question. My CRT lasted 8 years and looked pretty damn good.

This LG 32" LCD has been a Complete Disaster,

This set was not purchased through Amazon.com, we received this TV as a gift in December 2007. After hooking it up it worked for just over a month. Then the video and sound would drop out, a negative image would appear on the left half of the screen, and the set would not respond to the remote. Had to be manually unplugged. This set is under a 2 year warranty. It's now early August of 2008 and the warranty service center has "repaired" the set 6 times. The last time it worked for a whole month, but the other day it happened all over again. Only this time the screen just goes black, no video or sound and again it must be manually unplugged. The last time it had been serviced (by replacing a PC board on the main board) we were told if the problem reoccured the set would be replaced by LG. This will be the 7th service call on this TV and we are expecting them to place an order for replacement. The only bright side to all of this is that it was a gift under warranty. We'll certainly never, ever purchase or recommend an LG product.
Update 9/18/2008: The PC board which needs to be replaced has been on backorder from the factory for 4 weeks now. I guess they can't make them as fast as they need to replace them. We've been unable to use the LG TV for almost 2 months now. They've placed us "on the list" of customers to be called "as soon as the part comes in". We've had this LG 32" LCD TV for 9 months now and have had use of it for probably for only 5 months because of operational failures. Check back later for the next exciting story in the saga of the crappy LG TV. September 30th, 2008 and the repair service came and replaced the main board. The serviceman said that LG had engineered the board incorrectly and had to replace them in all LG models affected. Which is why it took over a month to return with a new part. Obviously they couldn't make the corrective boards fast enough. October 28th, 2008 - the LG TV is now acting up again. This time it's different problems. The sound cuts out for several seconds at a time every 15 to 30 seconds or so. And the picture develops streaks of video "clatter" in random locations on the screen. Sometimes the entire picture just starts coming apart in pieces and we're left with an unviewable image. Placed another warranty service request with Boscov's Repair Service. Check back for further developments.

32LC7D Good for the Money,

I just received this LCD for Christmas. Setting it up took no time, and syncing it to my cable box was easy also. The setting with this tv are very easy to set. The user interface is clear and concise.
The next day I picked up my verizon FIOS HD box so I could start using the TV in HD and thats when I had issues. I bought a HDMI cable and the non HD channels were fussy. I tried everything to try and get the picture to look correct but nothing prevailed. I even called up Verizon for support. I came to the conclusion it had to be the HDMI cable. I attached a Blue, Green, and Red Video cable, it corrected the issue. SO in conclusion do not skimp on the quality of cabling you use. Pay a few bucks more for the medium to high grade chords. It does make a difference. Now every image is clear and crisp. The picture quality I found was better next to the a comparable Samsung or Sony model. For the price, this TV is worth getting. Also as with all electronic high priced equipment, I would suggest getting a 3 year warentee. Do not skimp on that, you never know what will happen.

I highly recommend that you consider this fantastic set.
After buying a large screen Pioneer Plasma for the living room last year to watch movies, I had been researching a smaller LCD to replace my high level Sony CRT TV - mostly to play games. I studied the reviews, looked at real feedback in the AVFORUMS and did my own eye testing in the showrooms looking for the answer to "which is the best 32" LCD TV on the market? The first two sources (reviews and forums) mentioned multiple problems with multiple sets from multiple manufacturers. I could not decide from these at all.... Comparison testing with my own eyes (ie what I found to be a good picture) worked better. And it was here that the LG stood out. I compared it with Samsung and Sharp and Toshiba..... over and over the LG stood out! And for SD broadcast TV, where LCD's really let themselves down, the LG also looked better than the rest. Whether it is the contrast ratio or the LCD panel itself - I don't know. I don't really care! What mattered to me was the picture!! I also compared the sound with other models and again this outshone the competition. Another important factor was that this set was for the bedroom... and a lot of the time I would be watching it lying down. LG has "IPS" technology that allows this... watch out for sets that don't or you will be truly disappointed. I got this $850 with free delivery and free wall installation (delivered and installed within two days). It looks great as well with a polished, glossy black piano finish. The wall stand lifts up so its easy to connect future equipment when you need to. Price/feature wise it was very competitive with a 3 year manufacturers warranty - most of the others only gave 2 years max. Likes: Picture, viewing angle, sound, cabinet/finish, price, remote, movable wall bracket, 3 year manufacturers guarantee Dislikes... only one : the red "standby" LCD is a bit too bright (it is in my bedroom) but I know the intensity will wear off after a couple of weeks. Recommendation: buy some plastic conduit to cover up the dangling wires and paint over to match your walls! Its only a couple of $$ and makes all the world of difference. Its also a lot easier than digging out the wall! |
