Book Description

August 10, 2011 0321733002 978-0321733009 1
The secret to creative success lies not in knowing the right answers, but in knowing how to ask the right questions–and this little book is full of them! A veritable therapy session on paper, 344 Questions is composed entirely of questions designed to help you determine where you are in your life and career, where you want to be, and how to get there. Hopefully, you'll also laugh along the way.

Each spread in this colorful, pocket-sized book contains a series of several questions illustrated in Stefan Bucher's unique, whimsical, hand-lettered style. The questions are designed to get you thinking and drawing and writing with room on each spread to fill in the blanks and jot down ideas. Sample questions include: Can you name 10 things that reliably stress you out? Do you need 10 more spaces? Was filling out lists on your list? Or the decimal system? What happens when you get stressed out? Do you think stress is heroic? Can you please convince me that that's really stupid?

In addition to the questions provided by Bucher, the book features questions from creative celebrities who share some of the questions they were asked on the way to success, or, in some cases, the questions they wish they had been asked. The talented group of writers, musicians, and artists contributing to the book include:
  • Jed Alger
  • Judd Apatow
  • Marian Bantjes
  • Ken Carbone

This book is the best! Got one for myself, and I'm now making a list of people to buy it for. It's like the little voice in your head that tries to guide you to a better and better-lived life, but funnier, more probing, and better looking. (Well, better-designed.) It kind of hurts to write in a book that looks this good, but I recommend it - really thinking through these questions has given me new insights on how to envision and jumpstart my creative life. Also enjoyed the sets of guest questions (with some pretty shmancy people in there). I've learned a lot about myself, and had fun to boot.

Cool Book November 16, 2011

I randomly stumbled across this book and decided to order it and I'm glad I did. This is a book of questions geared towards designers, but applicable to anybody. There are questions in this book I've never asked myself and there are others that I can't seem to stop thinking about. This book is written in interactive flowcharts, so you write your answers directly in the book. It took me about three days to fill it out and during that time, I found myself rather introspective. It's extremely helpful if you're interested in doing a life evaluation or are at a crossroads and are unsure about what to do next.

I like a question like the next person. Except when it's tied to another question. And another one, and another one after that...

The biggest challenge I had with this book is that it reads kind of like what I imagine the typical therapist works like - Q, you answer. Q you answer again; Q, you answer some more.

Which is okay, and like many others I suspect that there's lots of treading water. Insights into your life RARELY come in a linear sequence - life throws lots of opportunities for jump starts and short cuts, though we tend to miss many of them.

If this were about life changing questions or questions that provide insight, I suspect we might have cut things down to about 30 questions. Here's my suggested five:
1. Where would you like to see yourself say 3 (5/10) years from now?
2. What currently prevents you from being there?
3. What skills and capabilities do you need available to you?
4. How will you use them to move closer to where you'd like to be
5. What time tomorrow morning will you start?

The rest will come back to those 5 questions. The book is an interesting idea and a tad too linear for my liking which in the end, didn't provide the type of focus that I think some people would prefer. But as a self help guide to therapy about 'you', this books pretty darn good

Lovely design, intelligent, interesting, fun.
I'm only on page 46, but filling the pages in when I can. I like that it's filled with "non-standard" not dull run-of-the-mill fare. It's creative and provocative. Read more
