This review is from: "EXTRA" SNK Characters 2 All About Illustrations (Kanzen Eikyu Hozon ban. EXTRA SNK) (in Japanese) (Paperback)
The books of "SNK Characters: All about illustrations" collection contains artwork of great quality from the illustrators and designers from the old SNK games (1990-2001).

EXTRA - SNK Characters: All about illustrations
Contains the following main sections:
- The King of Fighters (artwork by Shinkiro)
- Garou: Mark of the Wolves (artwork by TONKO)
- Samurai Spirits (artwork by Eiji Shiroi)
- Samurai Spirits/Warriors Rage (artwork by Kita Senri)
- The Last Blade (including Hanafuda cards, artwork by TONKO)
- The King of Fighters promotional art from 1994 to 2000 (artwork by Shinkiro and Hiroaki)
- SNK vs CAPCOM (various artists)
- Metal Slug (various artists)
- Cool Cool Toon (artwork by Ippei Gyobu)

This book includes artwork from: Eiji Shiroi, Shinkiro, Kita Senri, Hiroaki, TONKO, Takkun, Nao Q, NONA, Higuchida, Ippei Gyobu, Wang Yan & King Tung.

This book includes artwork from the games: The King of Fighters series (1994 - 2001), Samurai Spirits series (aka Samurai Shodown 1 - 4, 64, Warriors Rage), Metal Slug series (1 - 4), Savage Reign series (aka Kizuna Encounters), Cool Cool Toon, Fatal Fury and Garou series, Art of Fighting series, The Last Blade series and SNK vs. CAPCOM.

Almost all the illustrations are full page size and full colored. There are lots of specially made artwork for this book, but there are some that were used in promotional posters and game covers too, like for Playstation, AES/MVS Neo-Geo and Dreamcast consoles.

Shinkiro and Hiroaki's (master and pupil) works are the most outstanding and they are representative of the whole scene of The King of Fighters from '94 to 2000. There are several magnificent images of the protagonists of the "Orochi saga" (Kyo, Iori, Terry and Mai, done by Shinkiro) and from the "NEST's saga" (K', Kula, Kyo and Iori, done by Hiroaki). Their style is very realistic, specially Hiroaki's work for KOF 2000, with characters in very sensational stances.

Eiji Shiroi and Kita Senri's works are the representatives of the Samurai Spirits saga (Samurai Shodown and Warriors Rage respectively). Eiji Shiroi's works are identified by their "ink and brush" traces, based on the old Japanese art, with very dynamic and realistic poses. Kitasenri's works (some of them colored by Shinkiro) have a mix of anime and realistic style, powerful view of male characters and a soft and agile shape to female characters.

TONKO's works are related with The Last Blade saga and with the game Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Her style is somehow similar to anime/manga style but using soft colors and smooth shades, very distinctive and appealing.

There is reference about the game Cool Cool Toon in both "SNK Characters" books, the very promising first 128-bit game made by SNK exclusively for the Dreamcast console. The art is great, made by Ippei Gyobu, its style is colourful and very cartoonish and the game was developed in 2000 with the incipient "cell-shading" technique.

The final pages of the book show art from several games like Metal Slug, Savage Reign, Kizuna Encounters, Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting.

Books of great value for collectors, game fans, and visual artists!
