Book Description

Benjamin, a nine-year-old autistic boy with a love of Disney, was taking his first trip to Walt Disney World. The last thing his parents expected was to see him come alive.

What followed was a remarkable tale of inspiration, heartbreak, dedication and joy as Benjamin's family relocated from Seattle to Orlando in order to capture that magic and put it to practical use. Amidst the daily challenges of life for an autistic child, Benjamin's passion for one particular theme park attraction would lead his family on a breathtaking journey of hope and discovery.

How many rides does it take for an ending to become a new beginning?

Cory Doctorow, New York Times best-selling author of Homeland, Little Brother, and Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom writes:

"Brimming with heart and tragedy overcome, this is a book that captures the tribulations of parenthood, the magic of Disney World, and the wonderful online communities that allow us to lend aid and comfort to strangers around the world."

Kevin Yee, author of Epcot: The First Thirty Years: An Unofficial Retrospective, and Walt Disney World Hidden History: Remnants of Former Attractions and Other Tributes writes:

"'s a good book, the kind all of us should be reading. It's the kind of book that transcends its supposed subject matter and becomes about everything else that matters in life and love; the kind of book that makes you better for having read it. Above all, it's a book that addresses emotions straight on. The father's emotions, Ben's emotions, and even our own emotions as readers...

...Ben's final ride is a touching one that resonates deeply of parental anguish and reward. I won't spoil the details for you, but you should seek it out."

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and heartrending, but hopeful and inspiring March 29, 2013
Last year, a friend of mine was streaming the closing of Snow White's Scary Adventures. While I did expect to see plenty of people lining up to say good bye to the fairest one of all, little did I know that I would be witnessing one of the best stories to come out of this closing: Ben. The story was profoundly heartwarming, and being able to see Ben and his family ride one last time was beyond inspiring. When I heard that there was going to be a book about the journey, I knew I had to read it. Thankfully, the book did not disappoint.

What I love the most about this book is how rawfully honest the book is right from the start. It does not set out to paint autism in a bright light, or say that somehow Disney "cured" Ben. It presents all the negativity parents of an autistic child may experience. There are many tragedies told in this story. But as with any good story, tragedy is often met with hope, faith and a silver lining at the end of it all. Just as the Miles family experience the lowest of the lows, their patience is rewarded with the highest of the highs, which come in a wide variety of events, from Ben overcoming a challenge on his own to the many rewards he got from loving Snow White so much.

Despite its connection to Disney, this is a book I recommend to everyone, regardless if they are Disney fans or not or if they want to learn more about autism reading the story about a family with such a case. Mind you that it doesn't set out to paint a clearer picture of what autism is as that it is too complex of an issue that varies from child to child, but it does show the struggles and the rewards that come with it. The quality of Ron's writing is very high, making it very easy to read and comprehend while detailing every single aspect of it. I highly recommend this book if you want a real life story that celebrates the joys of living while teaching us how to face the worst of it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a heartwarming story..... February 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I started this book yesterday and did not put it down until 1am this morning - cover to cover!! The "love story" of Ben and Snow White is sweet and so innocent. The changes in Ben are ever so slight to the rest of the world but so overwhelming for his family just warms your heart. This book will make you cheer for Ben and applaude his parents. You will laugh, cry and smile all the way thru the book. Way to go Ben!!! Nice job Ron :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A quick, but important read. February 16, 2013
As both a WDW-junkie, and educator, I found this book incredibly touching, nostalgic, and well-done. If you are either of the above, please read this. Well done, Mr. Miles. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful March 31, 2013
What a wonderful book! I fell in love with Ben from the beginning. It is amazing how one thing can brighten a child and bring them to life. I have such respect and love for the parents of this wonderful boy. I couldn't imagine going through something like that. This book was so good I read it in a single night!

5.0 out of 5 stars When You Wish Upon a Star March 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a wonderful read from beginning to end. Ron Miles' account of the effect that "Snow White's Scary Adventures" (located in Walt Disney World) had on his son, a boy (and later young man) with autism tells the story of just how far parents will go to help their children. In this case, Miles and his ex-wife uprooted their lives after seeing how well their child did while visiting the park, so that he could experience the world that opened him up.

The stories of each milestone on the ride (1,000, 2,000, etc.) were heartwarming, not just as examples of how nicely Disney treats their guests, but how simple gestures can touch the lives of us all.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Touching Story April 26, 2013
The tale of Ben and his love affair with Snow White is a beautiful one. Yet, even more so is the love and dedication of his parents who made it all possible. 3500 is a heartfelt story about parenthood, autism, Disney and the magic that can be found when all three are thrown in the mix together. The book is well written and a quick read. You won't put it down. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant & Interesting Story April 20, 2013
By Melissa
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
"3500" was a wonderful read. The author was able to share honestly the hardships of raising a severely autistic child without overdone pathos. His frankness about the failure of his first marriage, his ownership of it and the successful co-parenting they were able to achieve made you keep turning the pages. I was so happy when the author ultimately found true love just like Snow White! Like other readers, I read this within 24 hours because the book drew me in. I left with a sense of appreciation for parents with autistic children, appreciation for the seemingly small things in life, as well as a strong desire to visit the Magic Kingdom! This would be a great book to read during the upcoming summer months on the beach or on the go while you travel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific true story April 2, 2013
This is not a totally unbiased review, as I met Ron, Kris and Ben back in the mid 90's before their move to Orlando and knew a little bit of the story. That being said this isn't the type of book I normally read, I was concerned I was going to find it too maudlin for my taste. I needn't have worried, it was compelling read that once I started I just wanted to keep on reading. I have nothing but admiration for their whole family for all the ups and downs they went through. Kudos also to the Disney folks for helping Ben have such a special time. It is an uplifting story that I would not hesitate to recommend to anybody.
