Book Description

May 1, 2008
The 36 Secret Strategies of the Martial Arts is a collection of ancient Chinese maxims that encapsulate some of the Far East's most cunning tactics for battle and deception. Each of these strategies represents a distilled nugget of Chinese wisdom. In the early 1980s, Hiroshi Moriya, an acknowledged authority on Chinese culture and philosophy, published a book in Japanese in which he analyzed and explained these strategies; then he used examples from ancient and recent history to further elucidate their meaning. Now, renowned translator William Scott Wilson makes The 36 Secret Strategies accessible to today's reader with his new English translation of both the Chinese maxim itself and Moriyas interpretive work.

The volume is organized into six parts (Strategies for Victory in Battle, Strategies for Engaging the Enemy, Strategies for Attack, Strategies for Confused Fighting, Strategies for Unified Battle and Strategies for a Lost Battle) with six chapters in each. Many of the ideas presented will be familiar; but Wilson makes their meaning even more readily understandable by assigning short, pithy titles to each of the thirty-six chapters: Borrow a Sword to Make Your Kill, If You Want to Take It, Leave It Alone, Stir Up the Water, Catch the Fish, Send Them to the Roof, Remove the Ladder, and so on.

While these strategies offer a look into the past, they are even more valuable to todays reader for providing insights into contemporary China. And, like such other classics as The Book of Five Rings and The Art of War, The 36 Secret Strategies gives the businessman, the diplomat, the politician, the military strategist, and the sports competitor keys to understanding, interpreting and countering the actions of even the most daunting opponent.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

It would seem likely that the great strategists and martial artists of both China and Japan would have been quite familiar with this work. Its durability and easy memorization indicate that it was likely on the school curriculum for young samurai, and eventually filtered its way down to an acquaintance by the more educated common people, as well. When reading through these strategies, great men like Hideyoshi and Ieyasu (warrior rulers of Japan), Yagyu and Musashi (renowned swordsmen) come quickly to mind. The lessons such men would have learned from The 36 Strategies would have served them a lifetime in very diverse situations.

Moriya has provided an excellent format for this work. The strategies have been divided into six general headings or parts, and he has given a short explanation at the beginning of each of these divisions. He then presents the Chinese phrases for the strategy and its commentary, translating and explaining both. Next he provides his own commentary, which is in simple and direct language. Finally, he provides examples for each of the strategies as it was put into practice. These examples range from episodes of battles in ancient China to the Napoleonic wars to WWII to the Suez conflict in 1956.

This book should have a broad appeal. Certainly those interested in the history, culture, psychology and the martial arts of the Far East will find it a fascinating key to these subjects, but it should also have a strong appeal to those who find themselves in conflict with others, whether professionally (attorneys and businessmen) or just in living in the everyday world. The book would definitely make a ready addition to KI's series on the martial arts and related subjects. I recommend it with enthusiasm.

a good place to start for beginners. examples from ancient and modern history make understanding easier. well written. I look forward to getting other translations to see how this one holds up. this was originally translated from Chinese to Japanese, then into English (it's printed in japan) but it is still VERY readable.
