5.0 out of 5 stars This Is The Path Main Stream Hip Hop Should've Remained On
This project by Sister Souljah is one of my favorite hip hop projects from the decade of the 90's. Yeah, yeah, I know she doesn't flow with the fluidity of an MC Lyte, or Queen Latifah, I don't really care that much about her lack of MC'ing skills, but it's her delivery an what she says in her lyrics that always drew me to her. Her voice is so powerful, I really dig that...

(First Star taken off) because the sister cannot rap lol.. She either too angry or too eager to display any real talent... I am a HUGE fan of sister souljah as a person, as a political and activist figure representing our People... but I had to pop this CD out, I felt like she was screamin at me... Just yellin and angry (obviously)... But, I will simply hold on to it as a collectible out of respect and admiration for this woman of Power and Dignity. Some of the lyrics were a lil extra hateful, but you know... to each his own... I prefer to hear More about Resolutions than Problems.. but We can't address one without the other.. (Second Star taken off for that) This album didn't have enough of a balance for me, too much blame, not enough positive reinforcement of how we're going to overcome some of these obsticles Anyway.. I'm a proud black woman so I can do is respect the sister for her opinions. No regrets with this purchase.

Her voice is so powerful, I really dig that about her, full of confidence, and surety, and the content is just as appealing, she's saying things that people of color are still dealing with, and losing the battle for, nearly two decades later, very relevant lyrics indeed. I listen to this project still today, pretty regularly, it gives me strength to deal with the evil forces that want to destroy you mentally as a person of color, they want to strip you of your dignity, integrity, and self respect, things that I won't allow to be taken, but to also have another voice, like her's that thinks along the same line of thought, is more than reassuring as to deal with living in the "belly of the beast", here in "Amerikkka". If you haven't got this project already, and you're a person of color with the highest respect for yourself, an the outcome of your people, you should buy this project, you will be pleasantly surprised in how good it really is, far better than the majority of the mainstream, whacked out "hip pop" "crap hop" garbage of today, that is supposed to represent people of color, which is plain an simple, a disgrace to "real", genuine hip hop, in its truest essence...

It is both ahead of its time and right on time. It's ahead of its time because she addresses some topics that haven't become hot (as far as I know) until fairly recently. This sista poured her heart out on this album and her love for our people is incredibly evident-especially to anyone who is informed about what's really going on. It was right on time because it takes me back to events that happened back then. I was always curious about this album but never bought it until now because there was so much good music out at the time that it kind of got lost in the mix. I read the other reviews before purchasing and even though they are kind of negative, these reviews made me want to buy it even more and now that I have it, I am BEYOND SATISFIED! I thought I was only going to like a couple of songs and merely appreciate the rest because I love this sista's mind and power so much, but I actually like the whole album a lot! Every song is good in its own way. The only people that probably shouldn't like it are white people but she is just being honest and brave. I think conscious white people would appreciate it though. She doesn't concern herself with that, however. She loves our people and we are her TOP priority! The only criticism I have is that she probaly felt that she had to rap to get the attention of the youth. She is FAR better as a speaker! If spoken word was as big then as it is now, I think she would have realized that she didn't need to rap at all! Her words and these beats are a potent combination! She doesn't rap too much, but if she didn't rap at all and just spoke her mind, and let her guest rappers do the rhyming, then this album would have been PERFECT! Five stars anyway for being realer than anybody in the rap game and putting a needed (still) feminine warrior aspect into Hip Hop culture!

2.0 out of 5 stars This album deserves its obscurity, July 30, 2005

Forget the politics, the album is just musically poor. Most of it boils down to pretty talentless, often amusical whiny chatter.

At the time, this lady was a girlfriend of one of the members of Public Enemy. She did get one song from them--Final Solution: Slavery's Back in Effect, and it is just so much better than anything else on the album that it's embarrassing. If you have to get anything from her, get the single.
