More About the Author
Melodie M. Davis grew up on a farm near Goshen, Indiana where in summer she ate a lot of sweet corn, tomatoes and ham and attended a Mennonite high school where her favorite food was homemade cinnamon rolls. Davis moved with her family to Blountstown, Florida where she first tasted okra, black eyed peas and collard greens and graduated from high school. She spent one year in Mennonite Voluntary Service near Hazard, Kentucky (topic of her first book) where she learned to savor shucky beans, turnip greens, broccoli, lasagna and tuna. She spent a year abroad in Barcelona, Spain (topic of another book) where she learned to love paella and cafe con leche.
She graduated from EMU in 1975 and began working at Mennonite Broadcasts, Inc., now Third Way Media, Harrisonburg, Virginia. Through the years she has written and produced media for radio, TV, video, internet, print, and has won awards from American Women in Radio and Television, Catholic Communicators, National Federation of Press Women and was Virginia Press Women Communicator of Achievement in 1993. In 2005, she received the "Distinguished Service Award" for alumni of EMU.
Davis has written a syndicated newspaper column since 1987, Another Way. She is also editor of Living for the Whole Family, an advertiser supported publication . She is the author of ten books on family living and is producer/co-host of Shaping Families radio program.
She and her husband, Stuart married in 1976 and are parents of three adult daughters, Michelle, Tanya and Doreen.
