You can spend a lot of money on a miter saw. But in my opinion, a lot of what you're paying for with those more expensive ones, is gimmicks. Other saws have micro-fine adjustment knobs, which is just plain dumb engineering but brilliant marketing. The slop in the hinge on any saw, the wobble in the blade, the wear on the teeth, and especially your tape measure will completely negate the accuracy that those other saws pretend to achieve. By contrast, skil's compound saws are all business. They don't pretend to be made for NASA, and after all, this wood we're cutting, not titanium alloy. It's smooth, reliable, well made with a thick aluminum base, solid components, and it's not an ounce more complex than a woodworking tool SHOULD be. I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend this terrific tool. Don't waste money on more expensive saws, and instead get yourself a good quality blade! You'll be very happy you did.

I was originally looking at a Dewalt or Hitachi saw for more money. What caught my eye about this one was the built in table extensions. I had been thinking that I might need a miter saw table but thought this might save me that additional expense. It did. I can cut up an 8 foot 2x4 with no problem using only the built in table and clamp and no additional support (a 10 foot 2x4 did require added support).

I checked the fence but it required no alignment. I was using the saw 15 minutes after opening the box. Just unpack, plug in, and go. It has plenty of power and cuts easily.

I considered the laser a gimmick and it didn't figure in my decision to buy this saw, but it turned out to be very useful. Alignment was perfect out of the box. From behind the saw, I could see the laser hitting the backside of the teeth as I lowered the blade. I've always had a problem with transfer error when cutting up wood. The mark I made on the wood seemed to be slightly off from where I wanted it or slightly angled or too wide, and then getting the saw lined up on the mark caused additional error. That's no longer a problem. I don't even mark the wood. I lay the wood on the table, lay a ruler on top of it, and slide the wood and ruler until the laser hits the ruler where I want to cut. Take the ruler away, cut, and repeat (you can do this with a tape measure, but a flat steel ruler works better). It saves a step (no marking) and improves accuracy. I cut a 2x4 into 4 equal length pieces and stood the pieces on end to compare. There was less than a millimeter difference among the 4 pieces and all were perfectly square. I've never cut so accurately before, and it was fast.

Miter cuts are also fast and repeatable.

I picked this up as a factory refurb complete and sealed in the box for $150. Taking the saw out of the box I thought it was a steal at that price. Very solid construction and seemed to be on par with some of the higher-end makes, with lots of features. After using it for a couple weeks I realized I'd made a mistake and got what I paid for.

The deal breaker for me was the alignment. I didn't test the alignment right out of the box and found out when trying to match up two 45-degee pieces of cut wood. The saw was off by 2-3 degrees. Per the instruction manual (as with other brands) the solution was to adjust the fence by loosening its bolts. Unfortunately for me there was just not enough play to compensate for the 2+ degrees. I could get it down to just a little more than 1 degree, but that was it. I can't believe it would be this far out of whack from the factory, so I suppose it could have been dropped. However, it was "factory refurbished" with an authentication sticker, so who knows.

With that said, the saw can still be used, but for accurate angles I would need to use my combination square, and even then that would just give me an accurate 0 or 45; so I decided to return the saw. Not sure this tool would be worth investing in a decent blade.

The other major draw back was the miter lock in the front. By itself not a deal breaker but a real pain. It's very cumbersome to tighten firmly without drifting the blade angle. The turning of the bolt rotates the table. Also, the table itself it difficult to turn.

As far as the positives:

- overall, solid aluminum construction. No plastic parts except the lock knobs, handle and blade guard.
- Accurate laser. This was dead-on right out of the box, but can be calibrated.

I did a lot of searching on the internet and finally came back to Skil for a very good price/performance power tool product. I was able to get the miter saw going after only about 30 mins of setup, and a check of all key measurements indicated that no adjustments were needed. I did some preliminary miter cuts to test the saw and everything works great. And the laser is a great advantage, at least for a novice hobbiest like me. For the money this is a great saw. I am happy I went with Skil and chose a 12 " over the 10" saw size. I am now using this saw to cut 4" dia. pine branches for .5" thick slices that can be used for drink coasters. This is a very versatile tool. I will also be making 45 degree miter cuts for picture framing. The saw cuts true in all tests I have done.
