Lots of nice hairstyles- but I need more instruction!,
By A Customer
This review is from: 388 Great Hairstyles (Paperback)
I am by no means a hair stylist- I need a little more help with achieving these styles. It would help greatly to know how to cut the hair to get that great look! Someone else might be able to give it one look and know just how to cut the hair. We beginners need a little more help. A good book though for ideas, and maybe you could take it to your hair stylist who could cut your hair the way it looks in the picture.

This is a Picture Book, but they are good pictures,

I can understand that people would be upset that this book does not have instructions for the styles. The editorial review does lead people to believe that this book explains things. It really doesn't explain anything. Then again most magazines don't explain styles either. This book is meant for choosing a style. If you are using this book for that purpose then its a great book. This would be a great book for salons to have in their lobby.

Pretty Good Book!,
By Lily "Random*Oddity" (Livermore, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 388 Great Hairstyles (Paperback)
I generally enjoyed this book, and I do think that it is a good reference for people looking to change the way their hair is styled. However...Note to Potentially Dissatisfied Customers: This book is NOT a book that tells you how to braid your hair or put it up. It is a book that gives you ideas on ways to cut your hair or restyle it at the length that it already is. If you are looking to find ways of putting your hair up, I recommend "Hair" by Anne Akers Johnson instead of this book.

Packed with current photographs,
By cplante152@aol.com (California) - See all my reviews

This is the book for finding great pictures of current hairstyles. The book is exactly what it is meant to be, a visual reference to help women find a new style, and more importantly, to assist in showing the stylist the desired outcome. This book is not intended to show the techniques necessary in attaining the style. The price of this book is easily outways the "cost" of a poor styling experience. This is a must have book for finding a new hairstyle.

Nice Book,
By StarGymnast (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 388 Great Hairstyles (Paperback)
This book is pretty good, but it's not one of those books that have hairstyles like braids and buns. The book starts off with some basic haircuts for all lengths of hair, then it goes on to give many hairstyles that can be acheived with one of the basic cuts. This book includes hairstyles for short, medium, and long hair, and has hairstlyes for all types of hair. This book also features tips about caring for your hair and what to do if you have problems like oily hair or split ends. My only complaint is that the book lacks instruction. There is some instruction, but not much. However, this is a great book, and wonderful for anyone who wants to do something new with their hair.

Surely not the best!,
By Saraswati "Saraswati" (NY, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 388 Great Hairstyles (Paperback)
The book description for this book makes it sound like it has instructions for styles for all types of hair. And it does, except I thought "styles" meant things like buns, braids and updos. The "styles" in this book are things like, "Blow-dry the hair, than use styling gel to hold it in place." Not very informative! This book has a nice layout, for short-medium-long hair, with a curly hair section at the end of each length of hair section. Overall, if you are into blow-drying your hair instead of braiding it or something of that sort, than it is a pretty good book.

nicht sehr gute--not cutting edge fashion, for sure,
By Rachael (HONG KONG) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 388 Great Hairstyles (Paperback)
As others have said, there are not a lot of directions in this book. We would all love to have hairstyles like these women. But we're certainly not likely to get it following instructions like: "Roll the hair up on curlers but do not comb out; then fasten the locks with side combs or clips" unless we know quite a bit already about what curler size to use, and how and where to fasten those locks. Honestly, these are the complete directions (and typical in their brevity) for a lovely hairstyle a la Julianna Margulies. There are short chapters that fill in some of this information, but this book would be most helpful either to take with you to your stylist, or to simply inspire you to play with your own hair. It was originally published in German under the rather wordy title "388 Frisurne fur jede Lange, fur jeden Typ, for jede Gelengenheit" (388 Hairstyles For Every Length, For Every Type and For Every Occasion)--and the young models are exclusively of Northern European lineage. There is no model over 40. I doubt there are any over 20!, so don't expect help for mature styles. There are none of Asian, African, Middle Eastern, or even Southern European descent, so no advice on ethnic styling. And the styles chosen are uniformly feminine, classic and conservative--no punk shavings and no consideration of superglue as a styling accessory. If, however, this sounds like your fashion ideal and you want a book to take to your stylist, get this one...the only thing is that most stylists already have their own books like this...

Very 'eighties'!,
By A Customer
This review is from: 388 Great Hairstyles (Paperback)
This book gives lots of styling ideas but be aware that many of the styles (and photographs)are definitely dated and hark back to the eighties! That said, the best part of this book is that it gives the sense that one hairstyle can still provide many possibilities for having different looks for different occasions.

Gorgeous pictures of "real life" women's 90's hairdos.,
By A Customer
This review is from: 388 Great Hairstyles (Paperback)
This book is chock full of high quality pictures of real-life women's hairdo's of the 1990's. No outrageous model do's here, the pictures are of the girl or woman next door. The quality of the photography and the paper upon which the pictures are printed are top notch. This doesn't look or feel like a semi-paperback book. There are two sections of the book: a. In the first section, there are pictures several basic haircuts, with pictures of various comb-outs from these cuts. b. Other styles cover the gamut from very long to very short. This is truly a fine piece of artwork that should be on display in every salon.

Inspiration for anyone,
By A Customer
This review is from: 388 Great Hairstyles (Paperback)
This book isn't so much about instruction as it is about possibilities. Anyone that knows anything about hair can get an idea of how the look was achieved if they care to play around with their hair for a while. Anyone that doesn't know anything about hair can pick and choose their favorite styles among short, medium, long, straight, wavy or curly hairstyles and show them to their beautician, who can give them the appropriate cut and instructions. None of the styles are particularly complicated, but rather variations on a theme. There's something to fit most any mood in here, too.
