Biography

Rock'n'roll pioneer Buddy Holly only lived until he was 22: his life was tragically cut short when he died in a plane crash in February 1959. In his brief time he recorded a hugely influential body of work that inspired future stars like the Beatles and Bob Dylan. Holly himself had been inspired at the age of 18 by seeing Elvis Presley perform, and had soon won himself a contract with Decca… Read more in Amazon's Buddy Holly Store

1.0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this., August 16, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: 39 Golden Greats (Audio CD)
Just about everything Buddy Holly did himself rates a five star from me; but this! through some nefarious deal a group called the Picks have managed to worm themselves onto classic Buddy recordings through the "magic" of overdubbing, and the results are not pleasant. Instead, buy ANY of the compilations that Amazon has to offer that are NOT overdubbed by the Picks, and you'll be happier. Believe me, I was burned too!

1.0 out of 5 stars The Picks Sing Along With Buddy Holly, May 8, 2004

This review is from: 39 Golden Greats (Audio CD)
39 Golden Greats is another of the interminable "The Picks Sing Along With Buddy Holly", another version of the same collection of Buddy Holly tracks rendered ineffective by the heavy handed overdubbing of backing vocals by John Pickering and the rest of The Picks which drown out Buddy Holly's performance on most tracks.
I accept that The Picks want recognition for the half a dozen or so early tracks of Buddy's on which Norman Petty used them before replacing them with The Roses but does John Pickering really have to authorise all the different compilations of these tracks under different names so that people step into buying the same stuff over and over again !

This stuff was also released on
Buddy Holly & The Picks Greatest Hits [GP2047]
Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue (no mention of The Picks but they are there) [ETOCD029]
Buddy Holly 57-59 The Rarities Collection (faint mention of The Picks on front) PLATCO521
The Very Best Of Buddy Holly (no mention of The Picks but they are there) (Metro330)
Buddy Holly & The Picks The Original Voices of The Crickets [CDNF088].

Sorry Picks but you were never that important in the first place.

1.0 out of 5 stars How the heck??, January 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: 39 Golden Greats (Audio CD)
How the heck did The Picks work out this deal? Buddy Holly lovers everywhere, stay away from anything with "The Picks" on it. These are overdubs without any authenticity, and without any need. Why tamper with Holly's originals?
