3DConnexion Space Pilot worth the $$$$,
By Englewood B. Eacon "AC" (Brookline, MA) - See all my reviews

The Space Pilot has been great so far. I've used it for about a month and it works really well with Rhino 3D. I was also pleasantly surprised when it worked automatically in our dimension 3D printer's software. Using it in Illustrator /Photoshop has been sluggish, but admittedly pointless as it's easier to move around the 2D space with keyboard shortcuts in my opinion. I had the basic 3Dconnexion Space Navigator prior to buying the space pilot. I would say the Navigator is not worth the $$ considering it only has 2 programmable keys and that's just not enough if you're using a professional CAD tool.

I purchased this for use with SolidWorks 3D CAD and for no other reason. This has absolutely transformed how I design on the computer. I've been using 3D CAD software on PC's since 1998, I started using this in 2007. After a little time getting use to the sensation of manipulating the model with one hand and doing the design work with the other, I have only gotten faster and faster. I can easily say that I spend less than half the time with my model on the screen than I use to during the design process. It's not just the model manipulation; the button layout is easy to access with your fingers. After customizing a few buttons I now rarely ever even touch my keyboard, only to enter in numeric values. If you use any of the current 3D design programs this could really help you. In regards to the review about it not working with MAC's, I can only say check and make sure both your application and platform is supported, so long as it is, this is a wonderful tool. It is expensive, but if you are a design professional, you'll get a return on your money very shortly.

If you are a 3d or graphics arts designer, this product is for you! I've been using 3DS Max now for 8yrs and I can't believe how I worked all these years without the Space Pilot! This is a must have gizmo. My work is now faster and more efficient as I'm able to navigate through 3D space at a fraction of the time using the Space Pilot. If all the buttons look intimidating, don't worry. It takes no time to start driving and it comes with all the tools you need to start using it right out of the box. Oh yeah, this will save a you a ton of time and less key strokes too. Get one!

I've been using this space mouse for over a year. I'm a mechanical engineer and i work mostly with CATIA V5 for the time i have been using it. I find this item to improve my performance and all around visualization of the 3D models. The buttons are well placed and I see myself using them often. The programmable buttons are a real plus but I have some little irritants when it comes to their use with CATIA. For example you program your layouts for doing sketching, another for doing parts and another layout for doing products (assemblies). Well, the space mouse software is unable to detect in what working environment of the three i just mentioned you are working on. Each and every time you have to manually select what layout you want to use. In the end it becomes annoying and since in Catia you change frequently from one environment to the other you end giving up on the programmable buttons quite fast. Other than that I'm in love with this product because it really puts fun into your long designing hours.

Expensive Paperweight,

On a PC - this thing rocks... Cinema 4d takes some creative work arounds which is pretty lame tho - so it gets at least one star. The major disappointment however - is when you're on what is now the major player in our industry - a MAC. Absolutely no support. Wait for years - and their developers still say "Oh yeah - we've been asking companies to help us but they're busy". This is just as it sounds - pure BS.
They've released a product that has become a paperweight for many people who bought it only to realize that something so unthought of is actually true: they don't support Mac OS. Crazy - but true. Very disappointing product. STAY away from all of 3dconnexion if you're a mac user. They may say they support it - but wait until you get all the fine print. |
