5.0 out of 5 stars Making complex subjects understandable
This has to be one of the best 3G books for all levels around, from novices to the experienced network technologists. Its technical depth and detail is astounding, the author really takes time to illustrate and explain concepts, not simply list them. Making this books very readable and informative.

This book has a lot of good info, but is riddled with silly errors, nonsensical text, references to figures that either don't exist or which discuss something else in the text and general clutter not to mention amateurish illustrations. In places it seems like all three authors wrote their own paragraph on a topic and rather than condense them down they instead printed all three back to back!

The overall usefulness of the book is clouded because of this. If the authors and editor couldn't catch some of these basic flaws, who is to say that anything else is valid?

The book really does demystified, making complex subjects understandable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for both tech and non-tech readers, October 18, 2001

This book gives very clear pictures on the wireless communications. Extensive usage of drawings helped to explain the technologies in an easy way to understand.

It is a good book for general education as well as references for wireless applications developers.

I like the chapter 10, 3rd Generation Wireless Applications, most. If you are a developer, you may get some inspirations from the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3G technologies made very simple!, September 10, 2001

"3G Demystified" lives up to it's title. This book is written in a style and format that makes for a very clear introduction to the upcoming 3G wireless technologies. The book covers the history, technical terms, standards, business applications & concepts in a clear, concise manner. The only fault- some of the diagrams are very rudimentary. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get a much better overview of the 3G wireless space.

5.0 out of 5 stars helped me with my wireless telecom industry career!, December 15, 2001

This review is from: 3G Wireless Demystified (Paperback)
I just switched jobs going to a major wireless telecom industry manufacturer and I credit this book in helping me with background information to quickly jump-start in my new career. This book covers basic information on both the First and Second Generation technologies (analog and digital), GPRS and EDGE (2.5 Generation), CDMA 2000 and Wideband CDMA technologies. There are chapters on wireless phones, networks, economics and applications which includes good market data. I have purchased several books on the wireless industry but found this to be the most useful, and this is the only one that covers all the elements in one book. Also the way the authors connect all the chapters and use historical and factual data is very interesting as well, and the almost 500 pages can be read in a a few days with no major problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reference to 3G for the non-techie, December 5, 2001
This review is from: 3G Wireless Demystified (Paperback)
The best thing about this book is that otherwise technically involved topics are rendered comprehensible for the average reader. However, I feel that certain concepts could have been better illustrated with diagrams rather than relying on textual descriptions e.g. the various states of mobile handset operation. In addition, many of the diagrams in the book are too simple to facilitate understanding.

Apart from the various standards relevant to 3G, cursory introductions to the various components of the mobile handset and network are also given, which should be useful to those who need a crash course in how cellular networks work. It is a puzzle why these sections were placed after the standards as people who can plow through the standards will already know most of the material !

Definitely a good book for brushing up on 3G.

5.0 out of 5 stars In depth, understandable and readable, September 18, 2001
This review is from: 3G Wireless Demystified (Paperback)
Reading this book was a breeze. Misters Harte, Levine and Kikta have transformed the hottest topic of the telecom industry into an understandable and easy readable format, without sacrificing depth of content. All of the key issues-- GPRS and EDGE, WCDMA, CDMA2000 and applications are covered. Having previously read other books by these authors, I find that their writing style enables anybody to understand subject matter that you would think only experts could decypher. I highly recommend 3G Wireless Demystified!

3.0 out of 5 stars UMTS technologies made simple (perhaps made too much simple), February 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: 3G Wireless Demystified (Paperback)
Suitable for non-technical people. Very light on detail. Just an 600 pages overview of UMTS technologies and doesn't provide a clear picture. Books by European centric authors offer much better reading and clear picture of the technology (Kaaranen, Korhonen, Holma, Muratore). It seems "demystifies" series books from Mc Graw-Hill are less technical than the publiher's "professional" series books. 3G Wireless Networks by Collins from Mc Graw-Hill (Professional) is also a better raading.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good textbook, December 11, 2001
By
Joshua Jacobs (Kailua, HI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 3G Wireless Demystified (Paperback)
This book is an excellent text on 3G wireless technology, and a good overview of wireless technology in general. It is an understandable reference to help understand how this exciting field is developing. The reader should have a strong interest in the subject matter, as the book is a teaching aid, and not written in a manner to draw the reader on. While it's not a book to cuddle up with in bed, it is clear and concise.
