What may not be apparent from the description is that you will get TWO rolls, one for each side of the fastener. For some reason I was expecting a single roll of self-mating material. When two showed up, I tried self-mating it. Surprisingly, you CAN get a reasonable mate if you turn one of the pieces of material sideways. Not as strong as using the proper mating material, but not bad if you need a weaker bond with easier removal.
Paired with the proper mating strip, the bond is tight indeed ... to the point where it's hard to pull apart. Like other reviewers, I found that the weak point is the adhesive, not the bond between the mating plastic strips. The adhesive is strong - just not as strong. You have to exercise just a little care when pulling the strips apart once they are fastened down.
Functionally, the somewhat weaker adhesive is the only issue I have with this product. It IS expensive, however. And I find the price hard to justify. the 4-star rating reflects my view of the relative value more than anything else.
The adhesive backing will stick to anything and stay stuck to it for a long time. The key to securing a good bond is to clean the surfaces first. I use alcohol and give it a couple minutes to evaporate. It also takes about a day for the adhesive to fully set. You can use the fastener immediately but should hold off pulling at it for that time.
When you press the two halves together there is still that reassuring "click". Both the sideways and pull-away hold is pretty strong. However, you can tug two pieces apart with some effort.
This tape is also reasonably thick. If you want something with the same holding characteristics and a lower profile (with some tradeoffs mentinoed in my review of that product) try 3M Dual Lock Reclosable Fastener TB4575 Low Profile Black
Another limitation, which is clearly stated if you look real close is the Closure Life. That's the number of times 3M claims you can pull two pieces apart and still expect them to stick together. It's listed as 1000 closures and that is probably enough for most applications. I haven't come close to that for any of the places where I'm using this and will report back when they actually start to break down.
For the correct usage, this 3M product can’t be beat.
I found the tape easy to apply. I pressed the two matching pieces together and measured out the length that I needed for my object. Then I cut the two pieces, still attached to each other, off the rolls with ordinary scissors. Once I had my tape strips cut to the right length, I peeled the backing off one side at a time and stuck it where I wanted. According to the package, this tape with its Dual Lock technology is supposed to provide high temperature performance, and it also feels fully waterproof. Looking closely at the Dual Lock side of the tape, it seems to be a bit like Legos, in that it has hundreds of little rounded heads that all fit together, and it lacks the hooks and fluff of Velcro. As a result, you really have to press the two sides of the tape together and squeeze to get them to stick—they're not going to grip automatically just by coming into contact with each other like Velcro. Ideally, this alternative design might give the Dual Lock tape some more strength and weight-gripping capacity.Read more ›

I used by mistake most of the 400 in a 400/400 mixture instead of going for 400/170 as listed... now I have almost half of a roll of 170 unused, but the ones I used with 400/400... Read morePublished 5 months ago by German Galvis

This comes delivered in two rolls--one being the "hook" the other, the "loop." It fastened together with a nice strong grip. Read morePublished 8 months ago by Basil MacDougal
