3M 8210 N95 Particulate Disposable Respirator - the "N95" means that if the mask is properly fitted, it will filter out particles down to .3 microns 95 percent of the time. That's great for particulate matter but not sufficient against flu bugs - yet quite helpful.

The types of viruses that cause respiratory illnesses measure between .1 to .2 microns. That means that while this mask will probably stop most of the flu viruses from getting through, it is not dense enough to stop them all. That is why the product description mentions dust and particulate matter but makes no claim or mention of viruses.

Masks with a high enough efficiency rating to stop viruses are incredibly uncomfortable. I've never worn one but consider that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) advises health-care workers working with SARS patients to wear the N95 mask - same rating as this one. Even the CDC does not expect people to function at work wearing masks with super high efficiency ratings. Therefore I'm not getting a superior rated mask because they are immediately uncomfortable and I might not be able to function wearing one. Health-care workers will be wearing masks rated N95.

The N95 masks are also valued because viruses often travel on bigger molecules such as molecules that contain mucus. N95 will stop all of those.

I would suggest this box of 30 as a good emergency supply and perhaps a better deal:3M 8000 Particle Respirator N95, 30-Pack.

I use the 3M 1860 N95 respirator for mowing the lawn, and it is great. I'm allergic to the grass, as well as other debris from the lawn mower. Without a respirator (or even WITH one that doesn't filter as well) I have trouble breathing afterward. This is just the product for me.

I use this mask almost daily. I have problems with scents like perfume, cologne, candles, cleaning products, etc. These masks allow me to be near these areas.

I've tried at least 8 different masks. This is hands down the best. It is comfortable, the two straps provide a tight seal so dust does not leak in through the sides. Best part, no "hacking cough" after using with 220 grit power hand sander.

Unlike other reviews, I've never had a strap break, even after using hundreds of this mask.

You can tell it is working because it get dirty, unlike other masks that stay clean. In other words, all the dirt is stuff that would have gone into your lungs!

I used to wear the cheap disposable paper masks, even though they were a pain; the rubber bands yanked at my hair, the edges were scratchy, and they made my glasses fog up so much I couldn't see. But I continued to use them, because I mistakenly assumed that a better-quality mask would be even MORE uncomfortable. After all, it offers more protection so it must be an even bigger hassle to wear, right?

Wrong! Oh, so wrong, and I had no idea until my Dad gave me one of these 3M 8210s. I'm never using those cheap paper masks again. Not only are these much, much more comfortable, they keep the dust out more efficiently too. The stretchy bands are silky and don't pull your hair, the nose bridge is padded with foam, and although the mask is thicker than a paper mask, it is easier to breathe through. Although the entire mask is held tightly to your face, it doesn't chafe a bit and you barely know it's there. And my glasses didn't fog up at all. These masks are a bit more expensive but worth every penny. If you suffer dust allergies, you owe it to yourself to use these in nasty situations. You won't believe how well they work, and best of all, you won't hate wearing them!

Respirators are great for use when getting up leaves or mowing the lawn. I use them regularly during fall for my lawn business. The straps are not durable for long-term use, but usually last as long as the mask stays breatheable. The straps need to be stretched evenly before the mask is first put on or it may seem too tight. One at a time stretch each strap a section of the strap at a time. Much better than the single strap nuisance respirators. Price was awesome on an open box. Wish I had ordered two of them.

I have been reading some of the negative reviews on this product. Far be it for me to be critical of another's findings but folks...you must read the product description before you purchase these things! I have not doubt as to the validity of some of the negative comments but can only say that I personally have not had one single issue with this product. They are NOT meant as a device to protect the wearer from such horrible little grunkies such as the bird flu virus or any other virus for that matter. These are industrial masks meant to be used at the work place where dust and other larger particles are flying.

Now that being said......

I have been using these things for about eight years now. Keep in mind that I am not talking about the 3M 8210 but rather the 3M 810PLUS...the ones with the yellow straps. I purchase these from our local building supply store in boxes of 30 and the price here on Amazon is quite competitive.

Since I left Viet Nam the last time...years and years ago, I have been quite susceptible to lung damage every time I am exposed to dust of any sort, pollen, dust and that sort of thing. I use these things when I mow our rather large yard and orchard, when I am pruning trees in our orchard, when I am sanding or cutting wood, when I am helping my son in his drywall business and most certainly when I am trashing and cleaning and remodeling old, old houses. Hey, I even use these things when I am out in the bush bird watching during times when there is a high pollen or mold count. It has been my personal experience that for the money, this is by far the best product to use for what it is meant for. My son and the folks he works with have been using them as long as I have.
