I really like 3M -- I own at lot of their products. You see, I'm an engineer and I like well engineered products. And 3M's product names let you know that they take their work seriously: from "Precision Mousing Surface" to their "Perfect-It" auto-detailing products. So when I needed a monitor / laptop arm, I was thrilled to see that 3M make a product that could hold my 20 pound 30" monitor. But there's the problem: it actually can't hold a 20 pound monitor. Well, it can hold it, but the spring that allows you to adjust the tilt of the monitor absolutely will not support 20 pounds. In fact, I would be shocked if it could support 18 pounds. What happened to 3M's engineering prowess? Being an engineer myself, I'd like to think that someone in marketing decided to stretch the truth a bit. I would be very disappointed if the engineering team knew about this problem, of just never bothered to do any testing at the rated weight.

That being said, I do like the laptop stand, which works very well. And I would have liked the monitor arm, if only it did what 3M claims.

Disclaimer: this is my first monitor arm.

When I ordered this thing, I had two fears: (1) that I didn't really think too hard about it fitting my desk (which I hadn't actually received yet); (2) that it'd just be a clunky mess.

Well, for (1), it's wonderful. The base has a clamp, but it's bolted in. You can unbolt it and use another (provided) long bolt to go through a hole in your desk. It's rock solid. Surprising, because my stuff is *not* *light*. For reference, it's a crate & barrel "pheonix" table. Pretty wonderful.

And (2), this thing is super flexible. I'm using a heavy thinkpad in a dock (w520), and it holds it all great. It's even got instructions for dealing with laptop docks specifically, and provides additional materials (velcro strips) just to deal with them. It has cable management built under the arms, and comes with a pair of zip ties. It also has some screw-on loops to further help manage cables.

Now, if I wanted my dream dual-arm contraption, I'd only suggest the following:

- A ball-bearing cuff in the middle joint of the arms. For heavy stuff, you have to use two hands (although with little effort) to move stuff about.

- A little more space under the arms for cable management. My DVI cable's pretty thick, and doesn't really fit in there.

I needed more desk space in my cramped bedroom "apartment". Having run out of places to stick my laptop and my 24" Dell monitor I was forced to use the laptop from my bed with the monitor perched on the edge of the desk. This was inconvenient and holding the laptop in bed was causing some carpal tunnel to flare up. I saw this mount and had some extra cash from selling some surplus inventory so I jumped on it. I am SOOOO glad that I did. It works perfectly, I did move it from the back of my desk (180 degrees of motion) to the front of the desk (nearly 360 degrees if I had less cords) and now I can comfortably use my laptop from bed, or from a chair in front of the desk, or even standing in front of the desk. I can also adjust the 24" monitor from viewing in the bed for watching movies, to viewing from the desk chair for working. The only qualm I have, and this might simply be me needing to adjust a setting higher, is that the 24" monitor seems to "sag" and pulls the arm it is mounted to downward over time. But I am very impressed that on the laptop side I actually have the full Dell E-Port Plus port replicator mounted to the flat portion of the stand (E-View I think?) that I purchased for it when I had it sitting on my desk. This limited my range of motion slightly when I have the arm all the way down, but its multiple points of articulation offset this somewhat.

I have a dual screen setup at work on a narrow corner desk, with a 24" monitor and my lap top screen as the secondary. I opted for the grommet set up, which was really easy to install. The desk space savings are significant, and the ease of adjusting screen height and distance is amazing.
The only reason I gave four stars is that the springs are not strong enough to support the lap top console with the lap top on it as illustrated on the picture. I have a standard 15" lap top, but when the lap top is clicked into the docking station, I have to open it 180 degrees to prevent forward tilting. Basically the lap top has to stand on its edge.

This is a great product and it does everything it claims to do. However, it loses a star because your desk or table MUST have about a 2 inch lip to clamp to. If you have a nice desk where the top is flush with the side, you will have to drill holes in the desk to modify it in order to install this product. I have a old table and a conference table that works, but for fine office furniture...make sure you have a good strong overhang to clamp it to.

Recently I became temporarily disabled due to a major illness. My career can be done entirely through a computer, so I was able to continue working, and attempt to preserve my sanity. Before I purchased this, I bought a TV tray style computer stand, which worked very well. One o the problems of this solution was that I would spontaneously become nauseated and tired, and would want to get everything away from me so I could curl up and push through. Later on, when I was ready to work again, I would need to pick up the tray from the ground. Part of the illness was painful movement, especially when bending over or getting up. This product allowed me to simply push my computer away from my face, deal with my personal problem, then, when ready, simply pull my computer back and continue working. This product is stable, I have a second 21" monitor on the other arm. It's a very nice product!

It does not give enough space for a mouse, so you will have to figure that out on your own. I wish the arm was just a little longer, or that one of the extensions for other products would work for this - I do not know if they will, and at about $25, it's a costly gamble.

In summary, this is a pricy product, but if you need something for a long term solution, for example, you are disabled and need a work station that suits a reclined state, this works great!
