Tunable Diaphragm – the Heart of the Lightweight II S.E. Stethoscope

The unique shape of the chestpiece also allows easy navigation around blood pressure cuffs and bandages. This stethoscope is a useful diagnostic tool for blood pressure and limited physical assessment in adult patients and its light weight and tunable diaphragm make it an ideal choice for certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, EMT/EMS, licensed vocational nurses, medical assistants and nursing students. Littmann® tunable diaphragm technology offers reliable and clear acoustics, versatility and time-saving convenience. Switching between bell and diaphragm modes is as easy as a simple pressure change on the chestpiece. There is no need to remove, index and replace for same-site auscultation. Resilient tubing folds tightly for pocket portability and retains its shape while patented Snap Tight Soft-Sealing Eartips help form an effective acoustic seal. The anatomically correct headset is angled to channel sound and enhance listening comfort while the nonchill rim and diaphragm provide patient comfort. The Lightweight II S.E. is made in the USA. The product and package are latex-free.

What are Stethoscopes?

Stethoscopes are diagnostic instruments that amplify sounds made by the body from the heart, lungs, abdomen and intestinal tract, or other body sites. A stethoscope is used to detect and study internal systems, such as fetal development, blood flow or blood pressure (BP), and respiration, and sounds, such as cardiac, venous, arterial, pulmonary, and uterine. Stethoscopes typically have Y-shaped rubber tubing that allows sound to travel from the chestpiece to the eartips. An open bell detects low frequency sounds, and a diaphragm detects high frequency sounds. A stethoscope can come as single, double (dual), or triple-head. Binaural stethoscopes are used with both ears, and single stethoscopes work with one ear. Differential stethoscopes are double-head, and allow sound comparison between different body sites. Non-electronic, also called mechanical or acoustic stethoscopes, transmit sound through hollow tubing to a listener’s ear. Stethoscopes are used by students and a wide array of healthcare providers including physicians, nurses, and veterinarians, as well as specialists such as cardiologists, pediatricians, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, and respiratory professionals in hospital, clinical, or other healthcare facilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended July 19, 2007

Although most current medical students, residents, and cardiologists are aware that the Cardiology III stethoscope by Littmann is in vogue, I decided that the price tag attached to one of those stethoscopes was outrageously astronomical and decided to purchase this stethoscope instead. As the name implies, it is lightweight, and the acoustics are impressive. I don't believe that the cardiology III, which I have used, offers anything more that is usable in terms of acoustic data, unless you have very sensitive ears and/or are a cardiology fellow/attending. Remember that medicine is definitely not about who has the fanciest or most expensive tools, but about caring and thinking.
I also recommend this specific color; I ordered it thinking that no one else would have this color. I was crestfallen to find that it is a popular choice among nurses, who also choose this color thinking that it's not popular, and therefore a less likely candidate for theft/long-long term borrowing. However, I have grown attached to the color; it's easy on the eyes, and the computer monitor doesn't reflect the true color. It's a little darker.

5.0 out of 5 stars great stethoscope May 1, 2007
Number of Items:1|Verified Purchase
I have been an EMT-Intermediate for 6 years, and every time i get into our ambulance its a different stethoscope with a different diaphragm that is just awful. All i use it for is BPs and Lung Sounds really, but it works great for both and is very comfortable. A friend of mine who is an RN recommended this, and for the price, it is the best stethoscope on the market (IMHO)... wish it came with a nametag or some extra earpieces, but for $40, its the best deal on the market. This was the least expensive with shipping that I found online, and in the 5 medical supply catalogs I reviewed before purchasing. Do yourself a favor, and buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all-around stethoscope November 18, 2005
Number of Items:1
Littman has always been a trusted name for high quality stethoscopes. The Littman Lightweight is no exception. This is the perfect stethoscope for CNA, LPN, and Nursing students. It is also ideal for people who have trouble hearing with low quality steths.

This model is durable and well-made. It is lightweight and comfortable...which is important when you wear it around your neck for extended periods of time. The tubing is flexible and the earpieces are much better than cheaper versions. I began with this Littman and upgraded to the Littman Classic when I graduated Nursing school. In my experience, a quality stethoscope makes a WORLD of difference in the care that is provided. It is well worth the investment!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, but not the best. October 28, 2007
Number of Items:1
I've had my Lightweight for a little over a year. I've found that with this scope, it's harder to hear apical pulses in women or overweight men with a lot of adipose breast tissue. It's good for blood pressure and very basic assessment, but if you're wanting a quality stethoscope, get a Littman Cardiology III. Cardiology III's are quite a bit more expensive, but it's a worthy investment for something you'll use over and over again throughout your nursing career.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Product October 27, 2007
By Gina RN
I really like this product. It really is light weight compared to other stethescopes. I can hear pretty well but I don't think it would be great on a cardiac unit. It's great for the ER.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product October 21, 2007
Number of Items:1|Verified Purchase
I'm a student nurse and this is my second stethoscope. I had the simplest type and couldn't hear anything, thinking I was deaf. I've read plenty of reviews and finally chose Littmann light weight stethoscope. I was amazed by the clarity of sounds, light weight, and nice appearance matching my school uniform. Although, I think the tubing is short, I'm fully satisfied with my purchase and recommend it to everyone except tall :-). Listening to blood pressure sounds is an easiest thing now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great scope-- but be careful December 13, 2011
Number of Items:1
I bought this about three years ago, on the recommendation of a senior paramedic. I'm an EMT, so it has spent a lot of that time in the back of my car, roasting in the summer, freezing in the winter, and getting stepped on and thrown around the rest of the year. It doesn't show any sign of the abuse: the plastic hasn't cracked, the earpieces haven't bent, and even the text hasn't faded. This may be the cheapest model they make, but the build quality is top-notch.

If you're thinking of upgrading from the throwaway stethoscopes they keep in the classroom or the back of the ambulance, you won't be disappointed. The hard plastic beads which punish your eardrums are gone, replaced by soft, rubbery earpieces which seal out outside noise. The sounds are clearer and louder than you'll hear from those silly cardboard diaphragms.

If you're used to more expensive models, I don't think you'll be disappointed. This model retains Littmann's tunable diaphragm, which lets you toggle easily between low- and high-frequency sounds. (It sounds like a gimmick, but it works quite well: just take a few minutes to notice the difference so you don't try to use the wrong setting.) I've seen attending physicians wearing this scope: it's not just for lowly techs. Unless you're listening to heart sounds in a quiet office, I doubt you'll gain any benefit from a pricier model.

Price aside, this model carries one big advantage: its weight. "Lightweight" here isn't just a euphemism for chintzy, it's actually a big plus. There's just one tube running from the earpieces to the head, and almost none of the bulky moving parts you'll find on other models.
