From the Manufacturer
The 3M™ Paper Sheet 336U is constructed of aluminum oxide and comes in grades 100, 120 and 150 for a variety of hand sanding applications. The medium C-weight paper backing provides the durability needed for coarse or intermediate sanding, yet is flexible enough to be used on curved surfaces. The cut-rate and durability of this sheet, along with an open coat construction, make it an excellent choice for offhand blending of adjacent pieces in wood- and metal-working, as well as for sanding plastics and fiberglass.
Aluminum oxide is a very hard mineral that maintains sharp points on the grains much longer than natural abrasives such as emery or garnet. The abrasive grains are adhered to the sandpaper with some space between them, known as open-coat construction, to minimize the buildup of dust on the surface of the paper, which would otherwise load the abrasive points. Loading often results from sanding soft materials and can clog the abrasive, shortening the usable life of the sandpaper sheet.
