Why Use Hearing Protection?

Hearing loss due to noise is almost entirely preventable by judicious use of hearing protection. To find out which hearing protection products are best for you, try different devices from the wide variety available today. Be sure to carefully read the instructions — hearing protection must fit properly and be worn correctly to do the job.

Hearing protector effectiveness is specified by a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR), typically ranging from 15 to 35 decibels. In practice, the protection that normally can be achieved is about 10 to 20 decibels. The more carefully you fit and wear hearing protectors, the higher your protection will be.

These hearing protectors are excellent devices for shooting. They provide a stereo sound-view of the world around you while keeping any loud sounds from affecting you. They are quite comfortable (though I have yet to wear them for long stretchs it seems like they would be fine over an afternoon). They are 1000% better than my previous hearing protectors, which were not electronic (I wouldn't go back).

The only thing that is annoying is that they advertise an "Audio jack" for "cell phones, MP3 players or dog trackers" but it is a completely non-standard (and mono, not stereo) port on the device, and the audio cable is not included. The audio cable is very simple (costing less than $0.50 to make, is my guess) and I found it selling from $22 to $40. What a crock. I'll have to check at Radio Shack to see if I can get a compatible cable for a reasonable price.

For shooting I can't actually imagine using this connected to an MP3 player as I usually want to know what's going on around me. However, I can think of other uses for this muff where I might want music as well (mowing the lawn, using a leaf blower, etc.), but not badly enough to pay another $22.

Peltor: Include a cable in the next version, or better yet use a standard 3.5mm mini stereo plug and provide or sell an adapter to the "old" two-prong plug!

My comparative review for the Peltor Tactical 6S and Tactical Sport Electronic Hearing protectors. I am placing this same review under both products because I believe others might be interested in a direct comparison if considering either set.

I purchased a pair of the Tac 6S for use at my planned Frontsight 4 day Defensive Handgun course, and used them a few times at a local indoor range beforehand. I found them to be very effective in muting the report of my 9mm Glock, as well as my Ruger snubbie with both .38 spl and .357 Magnum rounds. I found the amplification to be clear and effective. My only complaint of the Tac 6S is the difficulty in replacing batteries. It is a complicated procedure involving pulling off the earpads and the inner foam pieces. I DID find an "alternate" method listed in the instructions, which was a bit easier for me. It involves a small screwdriver and a bit of prying. Still, I give it 4 stars because they do what they are called on to do, and the price is quite reasonable IMHO. OH...one other minor inconvenience. There are on/off/volume knobs on the back of each earcup and, when the set is folded, the headband wires rub against those knobs. On at least one occasion, I discovered that the earphones were turned back on by the folding action. From that point on, I simply fold them up and THEN turn them off.

When I scheduled my wife for a one day class at Frontsight during my 4 days there, I realized that we would need another pair, so I bought the Tac Sport headphones based on other positive reviews. After I used the Tac 6S for my first two days, I gave them to my wife and I put on the Tac Sport set. My first impression was that the Tac Sport was even more clear sounding, with possibly even a bit more amplification.

I just wore these to the range and was pleased with their performance;

What I liked: No protruding mic or volume knob. On/off must be held 2 sec so no accidental power activation in the shooting bag. Nice low profile so they don't get in the way when shooting a rifle.

What I disliked: Proprietary audio cable to hook up an MP3 costing $49???????? Are you kidding????

The audio quality was really good so get them if you like the features but don't REALLY intend to hook up your phone, ipod or MP3.

So 4 stars for the headphones and 1 star for the cable = 2.5 stars overall

As others have mentioned the proprietary headphone connector is useless. I created an adapter using a radio shack 274-0249 1/8" jack and my 3d printer. You can find the adapter plastic part on thingiverse, thing 15115.

All you have to buy is the jack print the part and your headset is now "made for ipod"

Bought the item from Amazon for a pretty good price after having checked other online sources. Beware that this item is not recommended for shooting at an indoor range. An indoor range is much louder than shooting outside. The protection for your hearing is minimal relative to some non-electronic muffs that I have. Its NRR is 20 which is very low end. The fact that one can hear voices and such is true and the microchip is very consistent and reliable for low level sounds. But indoors it feels like barely any protection is being worn. Also, the circumference of the ear muff is not that big, therefore it you have larger than average ears: problem.

These are excellent hearing protectors that allow you to hear ambient sound. They fit well, provide sufficient protection, and seem to respond quickly to sharp sonic spikes, like gunfire. I have no problem with them from a purely functional perspective. However, if Peltor is going to go ahead and advertise that you can hook up your MP3 player to them, it would be nice if they mentioned that all the music you'll hear will be in mono, not stereo. It's a great feature - I just wonder why they couldn't take it the simple one-step-further and give us good audio. Probably in the next release....
