5.0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction, August 31, 2008

As a novice user of 3ds Max, I have been very frustrated by a lot of books which claim to be for beginners, but have tutorials that are difficult to impossible for the beginning user to follow. This book, however, seems to go the extra mile when it comes to guiding the reader through the tutorials, which incidentally relate to some quite interesting compositions, such as a waterfront scene of a pier with some buildings, which hold the reader's interest because of their artistic beauty.

I am not sure whether an edition of this book for Version 9 is available yet, but from what I have seen so far, the differences are minimal and so this book is still an excellent beginner's reference even if you are using Version 9.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I Need - Almost !!, May 13, 2010

This review is from: 3ds Max 8 Fundamentals (Paperback)
Having used Max for some time - Fumbling through endless tutorials and Long Nights of Frustration and Success ! I Find myself as a relative intermediate user with a lack of structure and fundamental Knowledge. I can get things done my way but not necessarily the easiest or "correct" way - or the FASTEST way. Ya know what I mean ?

This book is completely rebuilding my knowledge of Max on an interesting and entertaining level. I wish it was Max 9 but the fundamentals are what its all about. The Tutorials Do work if applied as stated and I am looking forward to adding them to my portfolio.

I feel this is a must for anybody's 3dsmax library and especially a beginner as the tutorials are step by step - easy to follow and lead to an interesting conclusion.

I would give it 5 1/2 stars if was max 9 and got into Mental ray - but then thats Boardman's next book on your list and refers to the "Almost" in the title. :=)))

Thanks Ted - and a Max 9 or 10 Fundamentals book would be well received.

Cover all basics, but in tutorial rather than reference form. Not all tutorials work due to ttypos and poor editing. Oh, and it is all Max 8.
