In case you haven't noticed, Seasons 1 and 2 were reissued by Mill Creek Entertainment in alternate packaging several months ago, and seasons 3 & 4 were reissued in April 2012. These reissues are at a much lower price than those original-issue products offered in the after-market. Save yourself some money and WAIT for seasons 5 & 6.
I noticed that Amazon is offering a $40 gift card for the original issue version. If I had one, I'd sell it to Amazon and buy the reissue next year.

Update
In case you've come to the page for the original issue version of Season 5, you'll want to scroll up to the 'other formats & versions' section and click the link in the Amazon Price column. Pre-order the reissue for under $10!

Another update
The theme music changed. I liked it until it occurred to me that this could simply be a cost cutting ploy to avoid a royalty on the original music, then I didn't like it so much.

Without question, Season 5 is the best season of this show. Sitcoms TV seasons are a scary buy, as it's always a mixed bag of quality, but if you had to pick from among 3rd Rock's 6 Seasons, Season 5 is the one to buy. The actors all hit their stride together and it's an excersize in hilarity that I have not seen on TV or practically anywhere else in quite some time.

I was so glad to get this set on a gold box special-I'd forgotten how funny, witty, well written/acted, and wonderfully entertaining the show had originally been. Since I am not a TV show aficionado, having some minutes cut out does not impact me as I simply do not recall the episodes in their entirety. Maybe if like some I had old VCR tapes to compare, then I might feel differently. I just know when I've had a challenging work day if I watch an episode or two, I laugh out loud and feel much happier. This is a definite cost effective stress reducer. I plan to get the entire set as they too slowly go on sale.

It has the same edited episodes as the anchor bay release. Only buy if you want the show. Its a great show. But a poor release.

I had the original Anchor Bay DVDs of the entire series and discovered that, while the sound and picture quality were fine (actually it might be some of the most detailed looking SD DVD I had), and there were good extras, they were the edited episodes for syndication that had some of the little extra gags (often scene-enders) here and there missing (in spite of saying "uncut" on the cover). So I was OVERJOYED to see that Mill Creek Entertainment was releasing seasons 1 and 2 uncut on DVD with the same extras. The only downside was the crappy packaging (paper slip covers for the discs) and degraded picture quality due to the higher level of compression (up to eight episodes a disc).

So imagine my disappointment when I found out that the later seasons released by Mill Creek were the same, edited episodes as from Anchor Bay, making the upgrade pointless. Jokes and small scenes that I remember from first broadcast are missing. Why didn't Mill Creek release the entire, uncut seasons 3-6? If they didn't have the rights, us 3rd Rockers would have gladly waited for the full versions. So why the rush to release?

That said, the actual show is dynamite and you aren't missing anything plot-centric by watching the syndication episodes. I consider 3rd Rock to be America's best sitcom (not coincidentally it is the most British-like American sitcom), though sometimes I can't make my mind up between this, Seinfeld, and The Simpsons when it was at its peak (seasons 3-7). The comedy comes from wit, wordplay, buffoonery, slapstick, grown people acting like children and cartoon characters, and despite superficially seeming to be a mindless Vaudevillian/Commedia Della Arte exercise, it was actually the smartest show on the air when it was on. Fans of Scrubs, Community, or Malcolm in the Middle (which shared many of the writers and plots, in fact Hal is almost a nice version of Dick) will enjoy 3rd Rock.

This one is an outstanding addition for your DVD comedy collection! The cast of Season 5 (John Lithgow, French Stewart, Jane Curtin, etc.) is as funny as ever! Hilarious!

Let me start by saying i love amazon and i love this show, but when you buy mill creek entertainment dvds, you get what you pay for. I bought this entire series in the mill creek version and over half of the discs FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES were scratched to the point where one or more of episodes skipped. Some even caused the dvd player to lock up and take me straight to the menu, and these came BRAND NEW FACTORY SEALED from amazon. And no, i dont have a cheap dvd player, its a brand new Sony blu-ray/dvd player that i have zero trouble with. I am assuming the reason behind so many scratched dvds is the fact that all the discs are put in little cheesy paper sleeves. I would stay away from the entire mill creek product line as they package their dvds in paper sleeves, guarentee them to scratch.

In season 5, the writing changed and was more "forced" comedy, unlike seasons 1-4 where the comedy was naturally funny. As Third Rock fan, anyone could find good humor in seasons 1-4. Season 5 - don't waste your money. It was like it wasn't the same show.
