Now me and my wife can both charge our phones at the same time on long trips.

Replaces an older 1 amp per port, dual port car charger and can certainly notice the increased charge rate.

I like that it is long and therefore easy to remove from the cigarette lighter socket.

I have mixed feeling about this charger. On one hand it charges at a fast rate (there is only one charger that performed better in my tests) on the other hand the fit in the car charging port is a bit loose and had to be readjusted when we drove on rough roads. The speed of charging is very important to us as the charger needs to keep up with the power hungry Sygic app that we we use to navigate.

Mpow Dual USB Car charger is fairly long compared to some of my other car chargers (3.5" long) and provides up to 4.2Amps between its two USB ports. The USP ports are not labelled . The front of the panel lights up in blue to indicate that the charger is working, given the loose fit this light was key to know when to re-adjusted it. Its weight is 0.9 oz.

For those who are interested in detail of how I tested this charger I am including the details below.

➨ How I tested this car charger:
======================

I have been testing various chargers for a long time, and people often ask me why results differ so much from charger to charger and often port to port. The results are different because they are affected by a number of factors. To help with a numerical explanation of the differences I began using a USB current monitor which shows the voltage and the current flowing between the battery and the device.

The amount of energy transferred from the charger to the device is calculated by multiplying voltage and current. Most of the chargers are 5V devices and most devices show the voltage very close to 5V. The interesting number is the current as it varies from unit to unit and from port to port.

The current varies based on what the device requires and what battery provides.

This review has a lot of its content borrowed from my review of Etronic ® 2.1Amps / 12W Dual USB Car charger Designed for Apple and Android Devices (White)

I decided to test it out with 2 other car chargers that I already had. I used a cheap little USB meter called the "Charger Doctor" - it shows you the voltage and the current drawn while your device is being charged through it. I will not get into the accuracy of the device, because I am using it to establish a frame of reference to compare the three chargers. I only have one of these charger doctors, so I could not test the outputs from these chargers when both ports will be used. In order to provide a little better idea, I decided to compare the results with that of the Original wall chargers that these devices came with.

Here are the results from the Original wall chargers -

Lumia 920 - 4.93V/0.84A
Dell Venue Pro 8 - 5.31V/0.93A
iPhone 4S - 5.05V/0.48A
iPad 3 - 5.05V/1.97A

Next are the results for the 3 car car chargers -

Device MPow 4.2Amp Powergen 2.1Amp Etronic 2.1Amp
High Amp Low Amp A port S Port 2.1A Port 1A Port
Lumia 920 5.25V/0.45A 5.25V/0.45A 5.35V/0.45A 5.33V/1.02A 5.05V/0.45A 5.04V/0.45A
Dell Venue Pro 8 0A 0A 0A 5.3V/1.81V 5.06V/1.81A 5.09V/1.81A
iPhone 4S 5.15V/0.99A 5.16V/0.98A 5.35V/1.08 5.22V/0.50A 5.04V/0.98A 5.01V/0.98A
iPad3 5.09V/2.00A 5.08V/2.00A 5.26V/2.00A 5.32V/0.47A 5.08V/0.93A 5.08V/0.94A

I apologize for the formatting of the table.

As you can see, the results are pretty much all over the place, within a similar range.

Last week, my mom and I did a road trip over three days, from WA to AZ. Over hundreds of miles of monotony, two things were a necessity to keep me entertained, and us not on each others' nerves while my mom was driving: my iPad, and a good enough car charger to keep it functioning.

The iPad drains fairly quickly while using it actively and the screen brightness is turned up reading, playing games etc. I have a number of old car chargers that I have tried, that show "not charging," or only have one port. With the multitudinous devices that are a part of modern life, two ports are a must. I don't like having to sacrifice my iPad if it needs charging, just because my or someone else's phone is running low on juice.

This charger stands out amongst the many offerings on the market, as it provides 4.2A for the two ports (2.1A per port). Many dual port car chargers only provide 2.1A shared, which may be enough for one tablet, or one possibly two smartphones. Tablets such as the iPad 1, 2 and 3 use 2.1A by themselves. Smartphones vary, but use around 1A. Add those current demands together, and you have a total that the Mpow can handle but many car chargers can't. With an under-powered car charger, devices would charge, but slowly due to the lack of current. They may even discharge, hence the "not charging" message that Apple users will be so familiar with, which would mean that the devices are charging at a snail's pace.

I had my iPad 4 plugged in to this Mpow car charger, as well as an iPhone 5, and both charged with no "not charging" messages. I also tried my mom's iPad 2, plugged in while my iPad 4 was plugged in. Both charged simultaneously. The newer iPads, the 4 and Air, use 2.4A optimally; the Apple AC wall adapter is 12W.
