5.0 out of 5 stars Seeger taught us to sing like we mean it January 29, 2014
The preeminent folk singer, instrumentalist, songwriter, and popularizer of the 20th century, Pete Seeger's warm baritone voice rang out in concert halls and on radio (and later on television) in the US and around the world for over 70 years. He was active from the 1940s, when he became a founding member of the Weavers, until the year before his death in 2014. He was also renowned for his courageous social and political activism, which got him blacklisted in 1953, subpoenaed by Congress in 1955, indicted for contempt in 1957, and sentenced to 10 years in jail in 1961 (his conviction was overturned in 1962). Yet opposition never stopped his prolific performing and recording; indeed, it seemed to spur him on.

This low-priced four-disc set, a royalty-free British import, features four studio albums released on the Folkways label during this controversial period: "American Ballads" (1957), "American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 1" (1957), "Rainbow Quest" (1960), and "Indian Summer: Original Soundtrack" (1961), as well as two contemporaneous concerts from Mandel Hall in Chicago, previously unreleased, for a total of 85 tracks. The concerts, as usual, feature a lot of audience participation; Seeger loved to get folks singing, and his fans loved to join in. There are no liner notes, but the sound quality is very good.

Many of these songs are familiar chestnuts, while others are seldom heard. If, however, you're hoping to hear Seeger's "greatest hits" from the civil rights and anti-war eras ("Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "If I Had a Hammer," "Turn! Turn! Turn!", etc.), then the albums he made for Columbia in the later 1960s would be a better place to start.

It's the old songs from back in the sixties. Some of the songs I have not been able to find on CD anywhere else.
