Book Description

Toni Teitelbaum is a former US Marine MP, a curvy six-footer with a fondness for designer clothing and handguns. She is also a wise-cracking high school history teacher, supervising a class visit to Washington. When a student bolts off the path near the Lincoln Memorial, Toni chases him into the foliage, where she finds more than her wayward student. A man has been shot, left for dead in the bushes. He appears homeless and drunk, jabbers craziness and dies in her arms. The police say it is typical street violence. Toni knows better.

Crime scene details don’t add up and when she begins receiving threats, Toni knows someone wants her to shut up. The teacher she has become wants to skedaddle back to the safety of her Marin classroom. The cop she used to be won’t let her. Before he died, the man in her arms hid a 4 gig flash drive in her jacket. Once Toni discovers what’s on it, there’s no turning back.

Fortunately Toni isn’t in this alone. Her father’s brother, Lester, is a gay introvert who works as a civilian number-cruncher at the Pentagon. Her mother’s brother, Gino, claims to run a cleaning business, though the family suspects the only thing Gino launders is money. Unfortunately for Toni, her uncles aren’t exactly The A Team.

Toni Teitelbaum’s got 4 gigs of explosive truth in her Anne Klein jacket. And though it’s been said that the truth will make you free, in Toni’s case, it just may make her dead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced thriller with the heart of a cozy mystery February 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As other reviewers have stated, Toni, a former Marine, now schoolteacher, is drawn into a deadly conspiracy when one of her students stumbles over a dying man. Toni follows the dead man's trail as a matter of honor and duty after she and her family are threatened. I must state upfront that I am skeptical of books with a huge number of 5 star reviews, however, in this case it is warranted. The story line hits the ground running, and does not let up til the end of the book. What I appreciated about the book is that the author captured the best qualities of a cozy mystery, and seamlessly integrated those qualities with the action and suspense of a well-done thriller. In a cozy, the main character is typically surrounded by secondary characters with whom they share strong, loving relationships and loyalties. Those secondary characters often contribute the humor and absurdities that the main character must deal with while attempting to investigate. In this book, Toni has a strong, loving support system from her two very different uncles, while her exchanges with her mother intended to convey an "everything's fine" attitude while avoiding an outright lie provide the gentle humor. At the same time, the author provided reasonable justification for Toni to pursue the dead man's investigation without veering into the TSTL moments cozies often contain. A thriller has to have action, believable danger, and a sense of suspense throughout -and the author captured this as well, in a conspiracy involving big business and government, the worst kind of omniscient villain. I also appreciated that Toni, while being an ex-Marine, was not written as a tough guy action hero, but instead had moments of self-doubt while trying to do the right thing. I look forward to reading more about Toni and her uncles Gino and Lester.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, fun, and suspenseful read! August 5, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am usually a slow reader, but the second I picked up 4 Gigs, I couldn't put it down! Stella Baker knows how to capture an audience and not let them go until the last page. I definitely recommend taking a break from daily life and become a school teacher/detective for a while! READ THIS BOOK!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read! March 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read through the sample and instantly feel in love with the main character Toni. She had a funny wit about her which I related to. "I don't have kids of my own, I borrow them." She is touring DC with her class and one of her students sneaks off and accidentally finds a dying murdered man. The man gives Toni a flash drive and the fun begins. I only read a couple of chapters a day, so I was quite delighted that the story moved along and kept my interest the whole way through. I would love to read more from this author.
