This album is for Bone Players !,

Ignore the previous reviewer. If you look at all that guy's reviews they are all one star and completely negative. At least he is consistant and I hope he cheers up soon.
Here is a nice album recorded live at a session with Mingus bringing together 4 of the great modern trombonists. If ya don't like bebop don't buy it. Such a dichotomy of approaches to playing the instrument. A feast for jazz trombonists and a chance to hear these guys stretch out !

In the 50s, J.J. Johnson & Kai Winding were an institution in bebop. In this outing, they add two more Trombones with the great John Lewis on piano; Charles Mingus on bass of course, & Arthur Taylor on Drums.J.J. & Kai played together as a duo, & were one of the reasons I got into jazz They were known simply as Jay & Kay.I have a lot of their albums but was surprised to hear only one on it I've heard before: "Now's The Time", a simple 12 bar blues written by the great Charlie Parker (Bird). The last tune on the CD is "Chazzanova", not a bossa nova tune, but a gorgeous ballad that anyone could appreciate. It was written by Mingus. Ow! was written by Diz & has a lot of up tempo interplay, point-counterpont, & shows a perfect blending of all four Trombones. You'll love this CD!

How to play Jazz Trombone in 8 steps.,
By jkt (N. Califiornia) - See all my reviews

If you're a trombone player or just a person that appreciates jazz music you can't pass this album up. These guys were and still are some of the greatest players. It's so great to hear each of them develop their ideas of the course of the songs. They each feature a different technique, each pleasant and interesting in their own way. I'm partial to J.J. b/c his stuff just amazes me. His technique is incredible and his solo work is a pleasure to listen to. But you have to give up to all of these guys.

I had this album on a 10" LP light years ago (and still have it) I wore it to a shade of white - so this shows how good it was. I will have the pleasure of listening to the other tracks now as there was only 3 on the original.

Beautiful music for beautiful eardrums! (?),

hmmm? well, this is a dazzling album, if not simply for the fact that it is a series of LIVE recordings (ALIVE). that such a collection of stylistically different and mutually appreciative trombonists can be found on it is only one reason to check it out. listen to stardust and you'll know what i'm saying- listen to the sounds of the club in the background, and the honestly of the playing....

The best trombone action ever!,

Four of the greatest jazz trombonist combine and produce a high-energy blast of trombone action. You even get the wild man Charlie Mingus in the rhythm section, shouting what he feels!

murder by bones,

This CD should be titled "The Art of Murdering NiceSongs." Listen to "Stardust"(is it really Stardust?) and you'll see what I mean. Beboppers should see a shrink instead of bothering us with their nervous ticks(or licks?). |
