Verified Purchase
The product description says, "100% Parts and Labor Coverage PLUS Accidental Damage".
Received a list of exclusions AFTER purchasing, which seems disingenuous as it appears this plan does not cover 100% of any damages.

Verbatim from the plan confirmation email:

"There are several important coverage exclusions of which you should be aware. Please refer to the Full Terms and Conditions for a complete list of all exclusions:

Pre-existing conditions or unauthorized repairs
Used items, floor samples, or products sold "As-Is"
Outdoor furniture
Products used in a commercial setting without a commercial plan
Damages resulting from exposure to outdoor elements
Damages from acts of nature or acts of God
Animal or insect infestation
Rot, rust, and mold
Theft and customer abuse or intentional damage
Other exclusions as listed in the Exclusions section of your terms and conditions."

I bought this plan with my purchase of a camera that came with 2 lenses. The lenses cost nearly as much as the camera if bought separately. When registering the plan I found that you can only register the camera on the plan and not the entire purchase even though it is packaged from Nikon as a single product. So apparently if either of the lenses stop working, I am on my on. Also when you read the plan details there is a huge list of things they will not cover. This includes attaching or removing any attachments or peripherals. I would imagine one of the most common types of damage on a camera would occur when changing lenses and this is not covered.

You feel good? its a good deal right? well yes, it would have been a good deal if
they would plan to spend at least a penny!
You think that your Camera is damaged they will pay you a penny? No!! They are not waiting for any claim! They want to give insurance to everyone as long as they dont have to pay anything. Your item is dropped, you call them, they find a way to fool you and will never respond to you!
My camera was damaged and I called them. They did not pay saying that this type of damage is not covered! I called them several times and the person who answers the phone just repeats the same sentences, he says this is what they told him (i.e., no matter what I say, he can only repeat the same stuff! ) So beware
I think this company can have a patent on how to get rid of all claims!
Note: All good reviews correspond to customers who never had to use the protection!!

Unfortunately, I had to file a claim, and am having a really difficult time actually getting a check. Smart Guard customer service is very bad, and I am beginning to question the legitimacy of this product. They claimed that they sent a check, but I never received it. They are now in the process of trying to determine whether or not the check was cashed, which is taking a very long time. In 2014, a bank can figure out whether a check was cashed or not in a few minutes. I think the business plan for Smart Guard is to make it so difficult to file a claim that you will just give up or forget about it.

Thank you for contacting SmartGuard Protection. How may I help you today?
Ryan
hello, I purchased the 4-Year Camera/Camcorder Accident Protection Plan ($450-500) for my new Sony DSC-RX100 camera
Ryan
i bought this plan to protect the camera in case of accidental damage from daily use
Ryan
i bought this plan to protect the camera in case of accidental damage from daily use
Ryan
i plan to use this camera on a vacation in a few weeks during scuba diving
Ryan
i purchased an underwater housing to protect the camera; however, with this, there is always the risk the housing may fail and the camera could become wet and malfunction
Ryan
if this were to happen, would this smart guard protection plan cover the resulting damage?
Adam G.
That is a very good question! Before I can answer, I must ask, was the housing made by sony as well?
Ryan
no. the manufacturer is XCSOURCE and the housing is called Waterproof Underwater Housing Case for Camera Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 LF208
Ryan

Adam G.
Ok, one moment while I research one fact, please.
Ryan
ok
Adam G.
Thank you for your patience. In this particular case, it would not be covered for the following reasons - the camera is not designed for underwater use, and the cover not made by the manufacturer specifically to allow that use; so unfortunately no, we could not cover that use.
Adam G.
However, a camera designed for underwater use *would* be covered for water intrusion
Ryan
ok thank you for clarifying. now in the instance, the camera was dropped during regular use on land and suffered damage from water or from the fall itself, would that be covered under this plan?
Adam G.
Yes, that would indeed be a covered incident!
Ryan
great. thank you very much for clarifying
Adam G.
My pleasure! Might I assist with any other questions at this time?
Ryan
i believe that covers all my issues. thank you for your assistance
Adam G.
Thank you for contacting the SmartGuard Protection, and have a great day!

Although, the emails steer you to file a claim online, it is next to impossible and exasperating. The interface is seriously messed up. What a joke. My camera needs to be serviced, and I'm wondering how many hoops I'm going to have to jump through to get it repaired. They certainly don't make it easy to file a claim.

I bought this coverage for a Nikon Camera I bought on sale for my Nature Photography (Professional) as well as personal use.

The purchase price was less than the MSRP and so therefore was the warranty coverage. I knew that going in, but at least I figured I would be covered for any accidents or problems for 4 years!

However upon reading the terms I learned a whole lot more through immense amounts of confusion. Like I said, I use my camera both personally and professionally. Keep that in mind, as well as no limits were stated on the product page.

According to the terms sent via PDF, there is NO coverage:
- during the Manufacturer's warranty period (1 year with Nikon Cameras)
- if the camera is used for a business
- if the camera is used outside the home
- for any pre-existing conditions (defects I presume)
- cosmetic damage (which I presume means if the SD card door were to accidentally get broken off)
- if an accident is deemed on purpose
- water damage even if by accident
- anything Warrantech/SmartGuard deems should not be covered

Some other scary things to note:
- If (and that is a big if) one has/can get coverage there "may" be a deductible. I didn't realize I was buying insurance when I thought I was buying a full coverage warranty.
- Oh yeah, full coverage....forget about it...coverage up to $300, maybe, depending on if they think it should be covered. So even though I bought and paid for a $450-500 camera (which with taxes came out over $500 on sale) only UP TO $300 MAY be covered.
- If you do ANYTHING with the warranty that ends the warranty. I presume, from their other nonsense, that this means if you do anything with the manufacturer's warranty during that first year too.
- If repairs/replacements are needed they might not use the manufacturer's parts...which would void any help down the road from the manufacturer in or out of their warranty period

So basically what I gathered is I bought a warranty, a full coverage (parts, labor, repairs, replacement, accidental coverage) however whether I have warranty coverage or not is debatable and entirely up to the decisions if/when I need help of Warrantech?

I received the e-mail with the terms, that stated it was ready to register the warranty. However I was never informed how to register it.

I did read the terms though and I attempted to e-mail customer service via the one provided a list of concerns. After a few days I gave it up, contacted Amazon via phone. The rep connected me to a Smart Guard rep who, even though I repeatedly inquired, could not or would not elaborate on the nonsensical terms; she just repeated a little of what was on the Amazon product page.

She did however check into and confirm that there is NO warranty for out of home/business/professional use. So I set up to return this warranty and was told I will receive a full refund of purchase price. If I do not receive it I will contact first Amazon then my credit card. I don't think they'll be keen to know I received a non-existent warranty.

I never purchase expensive electronics without a warranty and I ALWAYS read the terms. The phrase "have and have not" comes to mind with the lawyer written malarkey typed into this "warranty". I should have went with that first instinct when I was checking to this warranty and just said no and bought the real Nikon Warranty!

All in all a very misleading company. Buyer Beware.

Needs a lot better explanation on how to fill out the form and what it covers. What it says it covers before you buy, is never mentioned again.

Protection Plan was very easy to register. Although, it seemed a little vague with the products information. Once I filled in a generic description of it and hit submit, it let you review the product details and there was a section for the serial number to be filled in. I thought I missed it so went back and there was no place to fill it in. I hope that doesnt pose a problem in the future if i ever have to use it.
