I bought this tool after reading other reviews. It is well built. The gas meter shutoff size is 1 1/2 by 1/2 inches. My meter is 1 by 7/16 inch. It will work, but it is a sloppy fit. Let's get all of the emergency tool sizes on the Amazon site so shoppers know what they are buying!

I went to the hardware stores to find an item like this one. The ones they had didn't fit my gas meter correctly. As soon as I received this, I went to see if it would fit both the water and gas lines. It does the job. I hope I don't have to use this, but in case of an emergency at least I will have this handy. It won't spark and it also has a hook to help you lift off the water meter cover. Recommend.

This is a nice tool. It's lightweight, durable and it looks cool. You could probably use it to fend of vigilantes in the event of a natural disaster (I know, this is the kind of dumb stuff guys think about).

I purchased it for a disaster kit for my house without actually looking at my water and gas shut off valves. When I received the tool I went to go test it and much to my surprise, my water shut off valve already had a handle on it so I didn't need this to shut it off. Went to my gas shut off and the valve is actually positioned near the ground. This tool does work to shut it off, but it's kind of cumbersome and tedious, a vice grip, of which i have several already would actually work much better and faster.

It's good, just make sure it's what you actually need before you buy it. You may already have the right tool for the job.

I got this as we live in an earthquake zone and I wanted a tool I could safely leave by the natural gas shutoff and not worry about it's rusting.

Pros:
- will not rust - you can leave it outdoors in the vicinity of the shutoff valves.
- Works on the gas line and the water line.
- Water line opening is perfect and works very well.
- Not too heavy.
- 'hook' portion useful for lifting the water line cover out.
- Could be used to pry or dig through debris if needed.

Cons:
- finish was poor. Lots of flash left on the tool. It's very obvious this came out of the mold and was placed directly in the packaging without any smoothing or removal of flashing.
- the openings are the same size at the head and the handle - they work for the gas line - yet the valve head does not fit in exactly. It works, yet it could be better.

Overall I like it, it will do the job and it was simple to show my wife how to use it. I can leave it out by the gas line and she has peace of mind.

Hope that helps.

Joined CERT this year and wanted to get this for my emergency preparedness backpack. Good quality, light weight. Recommended by other CERT members.

I selected this for shutting off my gas because it was one of few available that was not made of flimsy stamped metal. This tool is definitely not flimsy, but I can't say how durable it is because, while the advertising said it fits the most common sizes of valve, it didn't fit either size valve on my gas meters. It would have been helpful if it said anywhere on the packaging what sizes of valve it would fit.

This tool is suitable for lifting the lids of my water meters and shutting off my water, but it is not really suitable for prying (the flat side is at the wrong angle to be able to apply much leverage with the handle, and the hook side needs a pretty wide gap to fit into). I can see how it might be useful for digging. I tried it for a bit of "fine hacking" before setting on a pickaxe.

I just had to get one of these because they look cool, the price was cheap and I pictured myself crawling through a field to turn off a gas meter right before a big explosion. In my head, I save at least 20 babies from imminent death.

Bought these for everyone's go-bags, very lightweight and small enough to fit easily into the bags, but big enough to whack stuff or to use to dig your way out of a collapsed building.
