5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding hybrid vigor! August 8, 2011
Format:Audio CD
The title says it all. Latin music is as important as AfricanAmerican music in modern jazz. Pianist and conductor Arturo O'Farrill leads the band started by his dad Chico in his own compositions and classics of multiple traditions. It would be worth buying the album only for the solos by OFarrill, Jim Seeley and Paquito d'Rivera. But buy it for the entire band and the vision of a music without borders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeper of the flame and beyond. May 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The torch has been passed from Chico O'Farrill to his son, Arturo who leads the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. This is the second ALJO recording on ZOHO and this recording explores more ground than the first recording which won a Grammy. This recording stretches beyond category to include amalgamations such as Celtic and Latin music. Special guests augment different pieces to add flavor and color to the already unique sounds of this jazz orchestra. Truly an institution that is not only keeping with tradition but writing its own book.

Mr. O'Farrill brings the joy of Latin Jazz . After seeing him in concert with his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra in Atlanta, I wanted to explore more of his work.

Superb CD and deserving of a Grammy! Arturo carries on the tradition started by Father Chico. If you enjoy this music, you might try Nachito Herrera & Pura Cubano.

The entire O'Farrill family should be commended for their contribution to Latin Jazz. First it was Chico, then his son, Arturo and now I had the fortune of meeting Arturo's son assisting Jim Seeley, composer, arranger, trumpet and flugelhorn player at a rehearsal at the "Fat Cat" Jazz venue last October in New York City in the East Village. We exchanged info and we formally invited them to participate in the Second Live Music Festival of Barichara, Santander, Colombia along with nine other bands in December of 2012. We will be working diligently to make this possible because we want the youth in Barichara, Colombia's most authentic colonial town, to be inspired by them to learn music. We plan to propose that Arturo, Jim and his team come and teach summer music camps in Barichara in June of 2013. The 2 - night youth group performance that we hope to have in December of 2012 should be the event that sparks the interest in music for the town's youngsters. It is our intent to invite another Latin music youth group, the Cuarto de Tono Charanga, from Bogota to play alongside the New Yorkers.
Our best to the O'Farrill family from Colombia, South America.
