Book Description

January 28, 2013
As America marks the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision this year, abortion has become the leading cause of death in our nation and worldwide, ending the lives of more than 42 million children each year and harming millions of women and men. In the midst of this global crisis, there is new hope. Beginning with one hour of prayer in Texas in 2004, the groundbreaking 40 Days for Life movement of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigils, and community outreach has mobilized more than half a million volunteers in 481 cities around the world. Nearly 7,000 babies have been spared from abortion. 75 abortion workers have had a change of heart and quit their jobs. 25 abortion centers have closed. And every baby, every changed heart, every closure is an amazing story. This book contains forty of those stories: Hearts changed on the most controversial issue in our culture Babies and mothers spared from abortion at the last possible second Shocking secrets from inside the abortion industry revealed Abortion workers experiencing a change of heart and quitting their jobs Thriving abortion facilities shutting down for good There have been 11 coordinated 40 Days for Life campaigns since 2007. These efforts have mobilized people of faith and conscience across all 50 of the United States, Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Argentina, Armenia, Belize, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Poland, Puerto Rico, Spain and Uganda.

Review

If you are growing weary over the increasing level of disrespect of the most innocent among us, open this book, read these encouraging stories of lives saved ad redeemed, and help let the light out! --Jim Daly, President , Focus on the Family

These are incredibly beautiful stories -- brief, crisply told, illuminating, heart-rending. Reading one a day does wonders for one's sense of human beauty and God's power. The power of prayer is breathtaking. Whole abortion clinics close, directors begin to reflect and to walk out, faces in grief and despair about abortions to be inflicted within them turn to faces of gratitude, and joy, and thanksgiving -- often after a writhing inward struggle, in which they first see that someone stands with them, prays with them, hopes with them. --Michael Novak, Author, Journalist, Diplomat, winner of 1994 Templeton Prize

40 Days for Life is one of the most impressive initiatives launched since Rove v. Wade. It s a powerful combination of prayer and persuasion, aimed above all at serving women in crisis pregnancies and helping rebuild a culture of life. The forty stories told here are stories of America at its best. --George Weigel, Distinguished Senior Fellow, Ethics and Public Policy Center

It's difficult to give a completely unbiased review of this book. The first time I participated in any pro-life activity was when I prayed for an end to abortion in front of a Planned Parenthood abortion facility in my hometown of Spokane, Washington four years ago during a 40 Days for Life campaign. A year later, my wife and I volunteered to coordinate 40 Days for Life campaigns in Spokane.

I've witnessed much of the growth of this amazing, life-saving movement. Along the way, I've read e-mail messages and heard bits and pieces from other campaign leaders detailing some of the incredible stories included in this book. I thought I knew pretty much everything there was to know about the history, anecdotes, and marvelous things God has done through 40 Days for Life. Boy was I wrong!

I can honestly say that in each and every chapter, I learned something new and gained some greater insight. More importantly, I came away with a whole new appreciation for the miracle--and I don't use that word lightly--of 40 Days for Life. I came away inspired as though I were just hearing about 40 Days for Life for the first time. I came away with a renewed passion for speaking up for the unborn--for those who cannot speak up for themselves.

The topic of abortion might seem like a horribly dry or depressing subject for a book. While it's clear the authors, and all those involved with 40 Days for Life, take their work seriously, they are joy-filled people, and that comes through in their writing. The book is an easy read, sprinkled liberally with humor, but also includes plenty of stories that will bring a lump to your throat or a tear to your eye. I certainly experienced a wide range of emotions as I read through my review copy.

So, who should buy this book?

5.0 out of 5 stars I am loving this book! January 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I am loving this book! Not only does it give an insider's look at the history of the 40 Days for Life movement, it gives real inspiration to keep getting out there to pray, knowing that the prayer does have an effect, whether we see it right now or not. The stories are broken down into daily 'doses,' along with an appropriate scripture and prayer to God. This serves as great food for meditation and more prayer. Please do yourself a favor and read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, easy read January 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Story after story shows how 40 Days for Life is truly God's work. It would be impossible to pick a favorite story; there were so many that touched my heart in different ways: stories about women choosing life - and being so glad they did, stories of ordinary people stepping out to do something and seeing amazing results, stories of abortion clinic staff learning the truth and leaving their jobs. I pray that every Christian pastor will read this book - and join the thousands of other pastors who have endorsed 40 Days for Life as a beautiful thing for their church members to participate in.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read! January 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
We often hear that it is in the ordinary that the extraordinary happens - this is the 40 Days for Life story. Its beginning was relatively small but over time it has shown to be practical, effective, and incredibly far reaching. If you're looking to be inspired or shaken out of a slumber then take a deeper look at the 40 Days for Life story and how your `ordinary' actions today can help save millions tomorrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars 40 Days for Life....... January 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I have been participating in 40 Days for Life since the first National campaign (I think 2007). As I read this wonderful book, over a weekend, I cried a lot (mostly happy tears) as I rememembered the wonderful miracles God has shown us at the abortion clinics in our city.

If you say you are pro life, this book will surely help you to show it. It will help to take away your fears of praying in front of an abortion clinic in silent, peaceful vigil. It will show you how you can help God save babies and mommies, one at a time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope For a Tired Mission January 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book and the mission of 40 Days for Life is a much needed a shot in the arm to what can seem to be a tired 40-year-old-movement. It was a joy to be reminded that a return to the basics -- prayer and fasting -- really does bear fruit. I would encourage anyone who has ever despaired that abortion is here to stay as the law of the land to read this book and witness a modern day David and Goliath story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope & Freedom! January 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book gives light and hope in a place where so often there is darkness & despair. It conveys the gift of true freedom and what a true "choice" is- the choice for life and to do what is good. This book speaks with compassion & thoughtfulness to those on both sides of this issue, providing a means to hopefully soften some hearts for those working in the abortion industry. These stories are clearly not only the work of those on the front lines of the abortion clinics, but also of the Holy Spirit working in the body of Christ around the globe!! I will read this over & over!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Stories of God's intervention January 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
"40 Days for Life: Discover what God has done...Imagine what God can do"- indeed. How appropriate a title for the stories contained in the book. People just like you and I, who just take the first step, which seems so small in comparison to the enormity of the issues surrounding us today. Time and time again we read how God takes the first step and uses our efforts in such a simple action to move hearts and minds and to save the lives- not just of the babies, but of the women who find themselves in need of solutions and support. Like in Chapter 6- 2 men are praying in a downpour in front of the building. No signs. Just standing and praying for an hour. At least one of them didn't even really want to be there. It was his first time and he didn't see what use he could be in front of an empty clinic, in the rain. But shortly after he was there, a young woman and her husband drove up, and she later came out of the clinic, running to the men standing in front, thanking them for being there and giving her the hope she needed. Oh my goodness. All the stories, the tears, the laughter, the heartbreak. There are 40 chapters with a short prayer and meditation at the end of each chapter, so you can read the book as a whole in one or two sittings, or you can read a chapter a day for 40 days, or even do both. Truly a wonderful, motivational book!
