If you're like me, you already own many short story anthologies and you probably already have some of the stories in this collection. However, you may not have all of them so here's the list of the 40 stories from this book. It's a very nice collection and the book itself is easy to carry around (for those times when you want to have something with you to read that's lightweight and compact). I actually bought this book not knowing the table of contents, so I was pleased to be able to read some unfamiliar short stories by writers Tim O'Brien, Amy Tan, Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Yasunawi Kawabata. (If you're a serious junkie of the short story medium, you would do well to pick up the anthologies edited by Tobias Wolff and Raymond Carver and add them to your collection!)

1) Young Goodman Brown – Nathaniel Hawthorne
2) The Cask of Amontillado – Edgar Allen Poe
3) Bartelby, the Scrivener – Herman Melville
4) A White Heron – Sarah Orne Jewett
5) The Necklace – Guy de Maupassant
6) The Story of an Hour – Kate Chopin
7) The Lady with the Dog – Anton Chekov
8) The Yellow Wallpaper – Charlotte Perkins Gilman
9) The Open Boat – Stephen Crane
10) Paul’s Case – Willa Cather
11) Araby – James Joyce
12) The Metamorphosis – Franz Kafka
13) The Rocking-Horse Winner – D. H. Lawrence
14) The Jilting of Granny Weatherall – Katherine Anne Porter
15) Winter Dreams – F.

I bought this for a college sophomore english class, but every one of the stories are pieces of fiction worthy to be read for mere pleasure. This is short story literature at its finest!

While at the end of the book, Beverly Lawn gives advise from a selection of one story, this is not a "How To" book in the usual sense. The stories themselves, by some of the greatest authors, do the teaching. Read like a writer and you will get a weath of education from this book. It's one to read over and over and points one to other works by the same authors worthy of reading as well.
