2.0 out of 5 stars Difficult, need guide book.
I bought this game for my daughter and she get's very frustrated with this game! It is difficult for a child to figure out what to do next. I wish we had a guide book/hint book for this game as it would make it a lot easier during those very (and I do mean very) frustating times!

If you have patience to try and figure this one out then go for it, but in all honesty...

My boyfriend (27) and I are playing this game right now. Graphics are great, gameplay is easy to understand and the storyline is cute. We're enjoying it immensly. My only comment to would-be buyers for small children is that it is a little difficult to control - especially in the swimming levels. For some reason, the controls are reversed when swimming, and it is extremely hard to navigate and pick up objects. This is particularly annoying when being pursued by a large shark. Also, you have to press 2 separate buttons at separate times to butt-bounce (their words, not mine.) This is just unnecessary. Experienced gamers will probably have less trouble with the controls, but younger kids and occasional gamers (like we are) may get a little frustrated. Amazon recommends this for ages 5-20, other recommendations say 7-12. 40 Winks is definitely enjoyable for adults who still enjoy cartoons and child-like fantasy. All in all, it's very much like a Mario 64 or Spyro. The controls are definitely more difficult in 40 Winks than these two top-rated games, but if you like this genre, it's worth getting.

This review is from: 40 Winks (CD-ROM)
This game is enjoyable, somewhat along the lines of Spyro the Dragon, or Crash Bandicoot. The storyline is deceptively childlike, masking certain comic mayhem which will amuse adults. You can play as a little girl or boy. I recommend the girl. Her teddy bear "weapon" seems to pack a better wallop than her brother's silly candle! The storyline concerns a grumpy old mad scientist who has destroyed all but forty "winks" in the world--those little pokeman-like critters who bring good dreams to people. Your mission is to free the remaining forty winks, who are kidnapped and caged around the game's 18 clever levels. The gameplay is fairly straightforward, with no "puzzle" rounds to rack your brain over. However, the obvious simplicity of this makes for poor replay--once you've seen it, you've seen it.There are no power-ups per se, but you have ample opportunities to don an assortment of costumes (think Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko), all of which are extremely powerful and fun to use. Reviewer's Hint: If you are looking for pink keys in the Space level, and you should find yourself on a conveyor belt carrying rocks, look up!

4.0 out of 5 stars 40 winks, July 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: 40 Winks (CD-ROM)
40 winks is a great game for all ages. Though it's rated E and has kindof a "For Kids" kinda style it is great fun for anybody. Weather your a young kid of 6 or 7, or a teen of 13 or 14, this is a great game.
NiteKap, the villian of the game, can't sleep. He decides that if he can't than why should any body else. So he sends his henchman, threadbear, to capture the Winks(Little creatures that protect us when we sleep and give us good dreams). He sends the Hood-Winks(Little green nightmarish winks that give us nightmares) to make sure that no when can sleep. Now here is where you come in, all the winks have been turned into evil hood-winks. However 40 of them still remain....And you must save them. How?....by entering your dreams(wich have been turned into nightmares).
You can chose to be rough or tumble. There are plenty dream worlds in the game. From castle dreams to dinosaur dreams to underwater dreams and ofcourse the classic nightmare, complete with ghosts were wolfs and spiders. In each world there are 3 or 4 levels. You must go into each level and find the winks. You must also collect dream keys for the dream clock. Once you have all 12 dream keys for a world you can battle threadbear and his companion for the world. There is also a racing level in each world. If you beat your opponent you keep any itmes you collected in that race. If you lose than you just don't get to keep the items you found. You also can find jack-in-the-boxes which allow you to turn into dream charecters like nijas or cavemen or fairies, each with there own abilities. As a charecter you must collect charecter tokens to stay as that charecter. Though it can be chalenging it is very fun. If your looking for a none violent, fun game than get 40 winks. It's worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, July 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: 40 Winks (CD-ROM)
If you like games like Mario or Crash, this game is for you. Lots of fun for adults.

Object of the game: to locate a specific number of "winks" and 4 keys in each world.

Not for young children though. They would get frustrated trying to find the items. The first winks and keys are very easy to find; however, it gets more challenging as you go along. Also as you enter rooms in the higher levels, some of the doors look the same--making it more of a memory type game/logic game.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 40 Winks (CD-ROM)
While this game will never be considered one of the all-time greats, it is certainly creative and addictive. Outstanding graphics and smooth gameplay enhance the overall fun of this unique game.

You play as one of two main characters Ruff or Tumble as you explore the dreamworld. The game appears to be geared toward children with it's cartoonish characters and cutesy names however, even the adult gamer will get a kick out it. In fact, don't get too cocky because the game is more challenging than you may think. You'll encounter a wide array of enemies and puzzles to figure out as you explore the various worlds looking for the all-important "dream keys" and you can't progress to the next world until all are found, which is easier said than done.

The graphics and cut scenes are smooth and top notch. The controls take a little getting used to (especially when swimming)but they are simple enough to master after a few tries. The different dream worlds are original and creative and you'll find yourself staying up way past bedtime as you try to beat this game. While you may be used to blood and guts and weapon overload with most games, 40 Winks is not about that at all. The main characters carry a candle or a teddy bear unless they are equiped with a special costume and there is not one single screaming, bloody death in the whole game.

40 Winks is a game that is creative and appropriate for kids without leaving out the big kids, which makes it a rarity indeed. If your looking for a Resident Evil clone, leave this game on the shelf. Otherwise, give it a try...but take a nap before you even open the box.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like this game!, December 2, 2002
By
This review is from: 40 Winks (CD-ROM)
Okay, so 40 Winks isn't the most awe-inspiring game that you can put into your PlayStation console but it isn't the worst by far.

Yes, I agree with some critics that the talking alarm clock was a bit babyish but he didn't appear very often other than to give hints on what to do in certain parts of the game. At least you didn't have put up with his voice for very long which I have to admit reminded me of someone with perpetually blocked sinuses!

The story is as follows. NiteKap, the villain of the game just can't get to sleep. He decides that if he can't get some shuteye the why should any body else get a good night's sleep? He sends Threadbear, his cute but evil teddy-bear sidekick to capture the Winks; these are little creatures that give people good dreams. Instead he turns most of the of the Winks into Hood-Winks who are little green little critters that give make sure that no can sleep because all dreams will become nightmares! However there are still 40 Winks left but they are held captive and it is the player's job to rescue them and save the world from everlasting nightmares!

To move from level to level you must unlock doors, so along with freeing the Winks you have to collect cogs to open doors as well as find 12 keys to put into a clock, thus enabling you to battle it out with Threadbear and Co. for fate of the sleeping world,

The two characters you can play as are great. Ruff and Tumble are their names and I especially liked the fact you could batter your adversaries into oblivion with either a candleholder or a teddy bear! Some of the characters you can become were fun too, the Caveman, a Monster, a Ninja, a Robot and my favourite Curryman and his little sidekick Manic Mongoose. You don't get a chance to be him until RIGHT at the end of the game, which is a real bummer.

This game is one of Playstation's "nice" games. There isn't any blood and gore; the most frightening things you will come across are cartoon like zombies, spiders and green furry Winks to name but a few and let's be honest here, they aren't that frightening! The graphics are great, even better when played on Playstation 2, but I like my old trusty Playstation One so this is where it gets played most often! Learning to manoeuvre your character through the many differing levels takes practice but once you get the hang of it there will be no stopping you. I like the fact you can play this with a friend, but also on your own.

All in all this is a smashing little game. Not to everyone's taste but I think it is great, especially as you can often pick one up quite cheaply.

ADDITION 4th Feb 2003

With Playstation 2 Games becoming the norm now-a-days it would be wise for any fan of 40 Winks (or any other Playstation One Game) to start stocking up their shelves. A lot of games will be transfered to Playstation 2 but not all of them. Somehow I can't see the likes of 40 Winks EVER going onto Playstation 2 format which is a real shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, cute and just irritating enough to keep you playing, January 30, 2002
This review is from: 40 Winks (CD-ROM)
I bought this game basically because of the previews and the cute graphic remark. I love this game and have a 5 yr old and 7 yr old that love it too. There is a short cartoon sequence at the beginning while the mom is putting the little girl and boy to bed. You can then play as the girl with a teddy bear for a weapon or the boy with a candlestick as a weapon. Leave the bedroom and go to the playroom for training in using the controller or jump right in to the "other side". You go through a door and end up in the woods where you pick from 3 places to go in the beginning or if you punch the witch a few times she'll race you. You are looking for 40 winks(small creatures) and you have to collect a certain amount of "cogs" to open each new door. The trick is in finding the cogs and the jack-in-the-box looking toys so your player can morph into a caveman, a fairy, or a cavegirl who has some mean karate skills. You'll need these other characters to get into some of the areas where cogs are hidden. This game is loads of fun and just frustrating enough to make you throw the controller. :) It's a puzzle for the adults, a clean "fighting", racing, exploring game for the kids and the graphics are really cute.

This review is from: 40 Winks (CD-ROM)
I stumbled onto 40 Winks late in the day; my path to video game fan was paved with SuperMario World for the Super NES and Croc for the PS1. While my boys were busy playing next gen games (PS2, XBox, GCube), I inherited a PS1 and started trying out obscure PS1 games in search of that magic combination that made Croc great (where are you now, little Croc?). Spyro is real cute, too. Anyway, I was buying weird PS1 games, and 40 Winks is a real TREAT! The graphics aren't the greatest and the movements are not as smooth as one might like in this PS2 era, but you get used to them after a few rounds. I played 40 Winks a few minutes a day for a few weeks, and it is awesome! The story is too cute, but you get to fight guys with no blood and no cursing, the levels are repetitive but can be challenging, and best of all, while you collect several different things throughout the game you're freeing the Winks from the evil Threadbare. I like a game where it is possible to do every little thing. Finally, this is a game that is just fun, with no horror or negativity, that one can enjoy playing after a tough day at the office. So many games now are dark and noirish, if not just plain mean and ugly...this is a respite from all that negativity.
