A TREASURE,
By MOVIE MAVEN (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Forty Years: The Artistry Of Tony Bennett (4CD) (Audio CD)
I first saw Tony Bennett when I walked into the rear of the orchestra at a Broadway musical for which I did the casting. Bennett slipped in during Act 2 and simply stood watching the show. When I recognized him in the dark, I asked if I could find him a seat. He quietly turned me down. He had seen the show from great seats three times, but loved it so much, he "sneaked" into the theatre to watch a few moments of it between his performances at a nearby cabaret.Bennett's love of musical theatre and great music ("It's not old music...it's great music," he said on the Rosie O'Donnell television show this morning) is obvious through his decades of recording and performing the best songs in his own very personal way, emphasizing the words and what they mean to him, letting the song speak for itself through him. This four CD album takes Bennett from the 50's through the 80's and song after song is a gem. His arrangers and conductors are only the best from Percy Faith to Ralph Sharon, from Neal Hefti to Frank DeVol, from Ralph Burns to Don Costa just to name a few. And the songs, themselves, are gems from cabaret to Broadway to jazz. My personal favorites are four from the 1950's, all on the first CD: Arlen and Capote's "A Sleepin' Bee," Arlen and Gershwin's "The Man That Got Away" (absolutely the best version of this song I've ever heard besides Garland's), Carmichael and Mercer's "Skylark" and Weill and Anderson's "September Song." This set is a treasure and one that you will continually find yourself coming back to for sheer enjoyment of a great singer in his prime. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This is a fabulous 4-disc compilation of Tony in his musical prime from the 50's through the 80's. There are 87 tracks, and a 60 page booklet that contains essays by Ralph Sharon and Will Friedwald and extensive notes by Tony himself. The audio quality is outstanding, and Bennett's voice, diction, and the emotional depth of his phrasing and interpretation of the songs and lyrics is magical. This a must purchase if you collect Tony Bennett. It's a great sampling from his amazing catalog and further proof of the man's musical genius.

Tony Bennett is at once amazing, subtle, and charismatic in his interpretaions of so many classics. Listen as he starts off, he grows and develops his talent only to get get better as he goes along. This is really a must have for any Bennett fan or vocal Jazz fan. The liner notes, by Tony, are a great bonus!

Brilliant,
This review is from: 40 Years: The Artistry of Tony Bennett (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful box set of 4 cds, of one of the best singers ever. Released in 1991 this includes his best from 1950 till then. The 66 page booklet is great. Loaded with photos, 4 very informative essays by Ralph Sharon, Leonard Feather, Will Friedwald and Jonathan Schwartz, plus track-by-track notes by Tony himself. Also a discography. This set is truly wonderful...from his jazzy numbers, to more light pop fare, this set is a necessity for all Bennett fans.

Great but I agree with Mr Rucci. Why can't we get a record of one of Mr Bennett's greatest, I Won't Cry Anymore?

This is a fabulous four disc set that will truly make you so happy. There is something about Tony Bennett that always makes me smile. He sings with great emotion and clarity, and his songs are timeless and enchanting. His rendition of "Till" sends chills down my spine- it is that wonderful. You will not be disappointed with this set.

From the beginning ("Boulevard of Broken Dreams") until today, Tony Bennett ranks as the BEST singer of all time. This 4 CD boxed set contains all of the familiar hits, plus some nice gems ("Stella by Starlight") that are not as familiar, but wonderful nonetheless. Sound quality is excellent.Mr. Bennett writes the notes for the booklet, which are his thoughts on the songs, why they were chosen, and some personal observations. You also get recording data, chart positions, plus great photographs and paintings. If you love Tony Bennett, this is a great collection. Don't miss out on this one!

Buy this set and discover what "perfect" singing is. Tony Bennett's voice in his prime was THE BEST. Frank Sinatra called him "My Favorite Singer". (Including himself). Beautiful. Very different from the low raspy Bennett of today. Though I still dig the low, raspy silver fox that is the modern TB.

This is a terrific 4-disc compilation of Tony Bennett's career. I received it as a gift for Christmas of 1994.Now I see a new 5-disc compilation of Tony's career has been released, entitled "50 Years: The Artistry of Tony Bennett". I wonder if it's necessary to purchase and if some rare jewels have been unearthed in the subsequent 10 years. I think I'll check the Amazon reviews for the 5-disc compilation. Terrific CD's to pop in the CD-changer and play in the house on a lazy weekend. |
