Perhaps the best known accomplishment amongst hikers in New England is to hike all of the New Hampshire mountains with summit elevations of 4,000 or more feet (along with a few other miscellanous rules as dictated by the Appalachian Mountain Club).

For anyone who either plans to or has already hiked the 4,000 footers, this book is a must. In addition to being a detailed trail guide (more detailed than the popular AMC White Mountain Guide), the book also features information about winter ascents, origins of the names of the peaks, and a historical timeline for each 4,000 footer.

The only drawbacks are that a) the book is a bit bulky to hike with (though the AMC White Mountain Guides from the past two decades are about the same size, so it's not a big difference) and b) there are no maps included (though with the AMC White Mountain Guide, the maps aren't waterproof or tearproof, so one has to buy better quality maps anyway).

I don't think any NH4K hikers will be disappointed with this great book.

I have, and use, the AMC White Mountain Guide extensively. That said, when I am planning to climb one of the 4000 footers I always turn to this book. I appreciate the significantly enhanced detail that the authors provide on the various trails you can use to ascend a given peak compared to the AMC guide. I also enjoy reading the geography and historical highlight sections on each peak. The prose is straightforward without being dry. A very good book. Now if it was only on the Kindle....

I am puzzled by the the asking prices ($35 plus shipping) displayed on Amazon for a book that has a list price of $24.95.

As stated by the other reviewers, this book is a must for anyone considering climbing the NH 4Ks.

If you have a goal of hiking all the 4000-footers of New Hampshire (and thousands do), this book is a must buy. It has all the routes and descriptions, tons of actually interesting historical information, great facts, and quality pictures.

This new version has a few hundred new pages, so it just keeps getting better. Highly recommended.
