This is a very nice, solidly built flashlight. My brother has the SureFire Ultra 2, seems very comparable.
I do like the battery indicater light showing how much battery power remains.
I've only had this since 1/10/2010 so we'll see how well it holds up.
I will post another review in 6 months.

Are you tired of spending extra for anything labled "Tactical", I know I am. Purchased the CREE X-Tactical as an alternative to the much higher priced big name Tactical flashlights and am very pleased with it. Have been using it for awhile here in Iraq and have tested it side-by-side with the famous brand flashlights costing hundred(s)more, and I am completely satisfied. Costs less and has more features too! Like it so much I bought one for both my wife and daughter (they would have preferred "bling") as a first line self-defense weapon, the Strobe mode is brutal, and if it won't desuade a would be attacker, well, then we'll just have to use our Second Amendment Rights!

This is my 3rd CREE flashlight. Silly design, 30% larger and heavier than my NU Flare and it puts out less light. The switch is really silly it has "L" "O" "F" and "T" settings, come on could you make it any more complicated?

The "T" is for temporary but sometimes it stays on, the "O" is used so you never turn it on, in "O" it won't turn on, the "F" is for two flashing modes. My least favorite is the "L" mode, this turns it on full the as you hold the switch it dims from 100% to 90% to 80% and so on. I have yet to get it to 10%, it dims the goes back to full and you start over

Caution!!!!! do not remove the knurled ring holding on the switch assembly, if you do you will be greeted with two tiny steel pieces and their springs flying across the room. Good luck reassembling.

I purchased this light a few months back and was initially quite pleased with it. First the positives: This light has a good, solid metal case that looks as though it could stand up to most anything. The light is very bright and the strobe setting would work well to disorient an attacker in darkness. The batteries last for a fairly long time given the brightness of the light. Now for the reason I rated this 3 stars instead of 5. I carry this light when I hike. Recently I dropped it from a height of no more than three feet and it landed, tail-first, on a slab of granite. There was only a slight scuff to the switch-end of the light. I've dropped many other types of flashlight from this height over the years and never had a problem. My X-Tactical XP-E totally failed. The switch no longer works on any setting and the light will not come on. While this light looks rugged and well made, the switch is not. If a drop of three feet onto a hard surface puts it out of commission, it isn't much good for anything, let alone tactical operations of any sort.

This is a great all-around tactical. Nice, bright long throw with an even, conical flood for wider field.

Feels very solid in the hand except for the switch. The switch housing has some lateral play and some "springy" movement upon depression which creates a slight, muted second clicky noise when depressing the switch. I personally don't find it to be a huge flaw, but wanted to include it for you perfectionists out there.

Previous reviews cited difficulty understanding the radial multifunction switch on the end cap. Seems intuitive to me. "O" for "off". "L" for latch. I had no problem getting the solid beam down to its lowest power setting. In "F" (flash) mode, press and hold for few seconds to switch from rapid "disorient" mode to SOS flasher. pretty cool.

Besides lack of a carry case, the only design change that some may appreciate would be getting rid of the locator LED. A faint red flash every 3 seconds in the battery indicator window that you would love if you dropped the flashlight in the dark and hate if you were trying to conceal yourself in a dark environment. Nothing a tiny dab of black paint can't solve.

Summary: money well spent. No regrets here.

The first review below was for the first copy of this light that I'd used for many months without any trouble to speak of. I liked it, especially for the price I paid, but it fell off my chest rig and got lost forever somewhere out there in the woods. In a million years I suppose it'll be worth a fortune. Anyway, I ordered a replacement and the new one is junk; faulty circuitry I suspect. It exhibits an intermittent failure problem. Once in a while and usually when I'm doing something important, the light begins to cut out or fade to very dim, and sometimes strobe at a rapid cyclic rate. Tapping, shaking and button pressing don't seem to effect the problem one way or the other and, for reasons unknown, the light will start running normally again on it's own after a couple of minutes.
The long and the short of it: my new copy of this light can't be counted on and I can no longer recommend this light. Two stars because it still runs, mostly, and if it quits you could use it for a halibut fishing weight or something.

FIRST REVIEW -- I use this light primarily for fox hunting as my scanning light. For the money it's a great little light. Output is plenty if you're running a 17hmr like I am. Mine has a tight, clean "sweet spot" with a useful amount of flood around the peripheral area which makes a good balance of throw and flood. You'll get eyes shining back at 200 yards and clear target acquisition at 140 or so; about as far as you should ever be shooting fox with that round anyway. Battery life is good for intermittent call and scan usage and I get three nights of use from a set of batts in this way. Naturally your mileage will vary. The filter caps are nice to have if you want to run such a thing (I only use red) and they stay on the light when you put them there.
