Os Mundi should have been one of the HUGE bands from Berlin, like the other bands from that ISLAND CITY in the midst of Communist East Germany, namely AGITATION FREE, TANGERINE DREAM, ASH RA TEMPLE, CLUSTER, and MYTHOS, to name a few. To call OS MUNDI a "jazz rock" band is misleading. They definately have that Prog-Fusion/Acidrock germanic sound, with a huge variety of influences, and tons of talent. Composing songs with sections that dissolve on the turn of a dime, OS MUNDI had it all. In their early days, would jam with the guitarist from ASH RA TEMPLE, and some of the guys from AGITATION FREE. If you combine ASH RA TEMPLE's early work, with the upbeat work of AGITATION FREE, and bits of EMBRYO, and a large dose of early 70s KING CRIMSON, and a dab of prog era JETHRO TULL, then you'll get a rough idea of their influences. The real secret weapon in this band, is the GUITAR PLAYER, who sounds absolutely current. The violinist, sax/flute player, and keyboardist are all top flight musicians as well. Their dense, fluid soundscapes rest upon two very technically adept drummers/percussionists. Oh, and they have a CELLO/percussionist too! Why not? This was 1972, when people threw everything they had into the Kool Aid. That includes CONNY PLANK, Germany's top producer, whose ears could mix this huge collection of instrumentalists into a prog/art rock sound that rivaled nearly anything done in Europe at the time.

The lyrics are in ENGLISH, the melodies complex, yet still dig into the soul. At times, the percussion is so thick, it evokes a dense sheet of rumbling waters. The 8 minute freak out "CHILDRENS GAMES" has this dense rythym break, topped with a supercool flute solo whirling thru the stratosphere..

1972 follow-up to the Berlin band's first lp, 'Latin Mass'. Even though this effort is apparently more in the fusion direction than 'Latin Mass', it's still good I thought. I mean the way these guys employ rock, jazz and classical music like this takes talent. Tracks that made for a good listen are the seven-minute "A Question Of Decision", the emotion-filled "It's All There", "Isn't It Beautiful" and "Erstickubungen" (the some flute work for this cut alone is almost worth the admission price). Check this title out.
