Last year after falling through the ice, seventeen-year-old Abby Craig woke up from death.

But she woke into a world she barely recognizes. She can't see colors, memories have been erased, and her friends all hate her. And then there's Jesse, who she loves, but who refuses to forgive her the one mistake she made long ago.

Just when she thinks it can't get any worse, the visions begin. In them, she sees a faceless serial killer roaming the streets. While the police believe that there have been a lot of accidents in town lately, Abby knows differently. And she soon realizes that it's up to her to find him.

But to stop him, she'll have to confront more than just the killer. She'll have to face something else that was lost in those dark waters. The truth.

Editorial Reviews

Praise for 44...

A FANTASTIC novel! 44 was just about impossible to put down once I started. From the very beginning, there was an air of mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat... I highly recommend this fantastic novel!
The Caffeinated Diva

Everything from the setting, to the time frame, to the characters, was beautifully developed. This book is truly a gem and I highly recommend it. It literally took my breath away.
Avery's Book Review

Sinclair sucked me in like a vacuum cleaner sucks up dirt. She brings mystery, love, and friendship to the book and weaves a lovely tale.
Just Another Book Addict

IMPRESSIVE! 44 is a wolf in sheep's clothing, and will take readers by storm. With so much information in such a small book it will impress readers to the detail and depth in so few pages. The conclusion will take your breath away. Don't miss you chance to check out this amazing story.
The Book Whisperer

Fantastic, edge of your seat thriller. A MUST READ! It twists you about and as soon as you think you have it all figured out, throws you for the final loop with an ending that will break the hardest heart.

From the Author

"I love the 44 series. It has everything a good book needs: suspense, a sweet love story, sadness, and a friendship that cannot be broken even in death."

Those words, written by a fan, are posted in my office. Whenever I'm struggling, whenever I can't see the path in front of Abby (or me), I look up at that quote. I take the words in and try to stay true to them. I do my best to live up to them. Every day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the sequel November 21, 2011
I can't believe someone actually gave this book a bad review. I'm pretty intolerant when it comes to stilted dialog, awkward transitions, and more(anyone who has read my book reviews can vouch for that), and I didn't notice any of that while reading this story.

I was fortunate enough to get the Kindle edition free but will happily pay when the next volume comes out.

The lack of "flow" mentioned by the one-star review was something I didn't notice as a lack of writing skill; on the contrary, I thought the bits and pieces of information revealed in each chapter lent a feeling of how lost Abby felt while trying to get her memories back. We as the readers don't have any "insider" knowledge and have to find things out in real time, so to speak, as Abby does.

The twist at the end was perfect -- made me want to re-read the book immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars 44 - Jools Sinclair June 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I was contacted by the author to review this book, and truth be told I was a little apprehensive when I started this book. I also have to say that once I started it I didn't want to put it down. I was sucked straight into the story and the characters. I really liked Abby she was dealing with a lot and while she may not have been happy she was dealing, and living. Her brush with death left her only being able to see in black and white, her position as star soccer player has slipped away and even her friends seemed to think she is a freak. Abby seems to have a solid relationship with her sister Kate, and the doctor who saved her life. She only has one friend left and that is Jesse. I loved all these characters! Things really start to get exciting when people start turning up dead and Abby dreams about the murders. This sent Abby and her sister who is also a reporter down the path of trying to figure out who the killer is. Let me tell you when they finally figured it out I was shocked, I was barking up the wrong tree. Through all of this Abby is also trying to work out her feelings for Jesse, and trying to remember her past. I have to say the ending totally surprised me, I really never saw it coming and that is something I look for in a book, twists, turns, and surprises. This book truly delivered. I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it! I really hope you guys will give this book a try, it won't disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read November 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm usually not into suspense type books like this but I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well written and had enough going on to keep you guessing. The characters were likeable and as a reader I could feel a connection with them. I liked the surprise ending and look forward to the next book.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK story...terrible editing December 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The title of my review pretty much sums it up. The story was not the best I've read, but it wasn't bad either. I would give it four stars based on the story alone. However, the other reviewer who mentioned that it is full of errors was not kidding. I wanted to get lost in the author's words, but I couldn't do so because of the numerous spelling and grammar errors and word omissions. I'm pretty forgiving of such errors when I read text on the Web, but when I settle down with a book to be entertained, I want to be immersed in the story and not be distracted by poor grammar or sloppy editing. That's why I'm docking one star from the four I would give it otherwise.

2.0 out of 5 stars Murder Mystery - Not a Romance November 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For me this story was awful not only because it is written in a juvenile style with stilted dialogue, underdeveloped characters and frustrating subject changes, but because the main character is not really likeable, screaming at people who interrupt her and cringing at confrontation. I also hated the ending.

Abby "died" after drowning but suddenly and miraculously revived. Being dead changed her so that she can no longer play soccer or seemingly maintain any friendships. There are murders happening in her town that she starts seeing in visions which she tells to her sister, a newspaper reporter. The story focuses on the murders and finding the murderer; while the reader is frustrated by the total lack of information on why Amanda has abandoned their friendship and why she doesn't just talk to her best friend and love interest, Jessie about their relationship.

Parts of this book that I didn't like: 1) The psychiatrist Dr. Krowe. He is not like normal shrinks that ask you "how does that make you feel?" No, on the first visit that the reader witnesses, Dr. Krowe is on a roll with "you must be devastated that colleges no longer want you, you can't play soccer as great as you used to, you should probably quit, and you have no friends." He is not a monster, but his psychiatry is abrasive. 2) Kate's attraction for Matt - why was he even in the story? 3) the end - not a happy love story!

If you read stories for a happy ending and a fun diversion like I do, you will want to know that this is not one of those. The biggest hint I can give you and wished someone else had mentioned in their review is think of the movie "Sixth Sense".

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystery thriller that will take your breath away! June 9, 2011
By Kristen
Format:Kindle Edition
GENRE: YA Paranormal/Mystery/Romance
THEME: Visions/Dreams
BLOG: [..]

Imagine yourself falling through thick ice, your lungs taking in ice-cold water and your heart slowing down with every inch you fall below the depths. For Abby she experienced just this and was claimed to be dead until she startlingly woke up, but something was wrong she didn't wake up normal. 44 is a book of fantastic mystery and thrilling twists.

After the accident of falling through the ice Abby's life has never been the same. Her friends don't talk to her, she can no longer play on her soccer team, and she starts having these awful nightmares of a man killing people. Luckily she has her best friend Jesse who still is talking to her and her sister who is her biggest supporter. But when the deaths she see start happening for real outside her dreams, her life takes an even deeper and more dangerous turn.

I loved 44, I don't want to giveaway why it's called 44 because I feel as a reader its fun to discover that on your own. Abby is a character that has really hit rock bottom when it comes to her social life, I really felt for her as she struggles with being an outcast and trying to find herself again.

The plot was brilliant and chilling, I had no idea who the killer was and when you think you've figured it out another twist happens. I really enjoyed how Abby and her sister tried to solve the mystery together like a little team.
Jesse, Abby's best friend was a breath of fresh air as a male lead. He was a big mystery and someone who was always there for Abby. He made sure she knew he was there for her, even if he wasn't always around. I enjoyed reading about his relationship with Abby and their chemistry really pulled everything together.
