5.0 out of 5 stars No detail too small...thank goodness, April 2, 2007

Ever find a nice looking old rifle in a shop or at a gun show but were worried about one or two non-standard features? Is it genuine, or is it a fake? Should you buy it and risk paying good money for a "parts gun," or leave it and risk losing a valuable addition to your collection?

This little volume can help you decide. It has detailed descriptions of all the standard-configuration .45-70 "trapdoor" Springfields--all the parts, all the markings. But it also documents non-standard configurations that are nonetheless genuine and the history that explains why they were made that way. Why do so many 1884 rifles have 1873 breech blocks? Is it possible that that 1888 rifle came equipped with a two-piece trigger guard rather than the standard one piece? This is the sort of minutia that makes our friends and family roll their eyes but that enthralls collectors of antique firearms, and it is just the sort of detail the authors provide.

Small and light enough to take with you, this book should be standard "hunting equipment" for collectors on the prowl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete and Thorough, October 18, 2007
Using line drawings, charts and well-researched texts, Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch bring us a comprehensive, part-by-part reference book dedicated to an important U.S. military firearm. I have a couple of .45 Springfields and I found both of them covered in detail in this book.

This isn't light reading, but if you've got a .45 Springfield you're trying to identify, or restore, this book is worth its weight in gold.
It's thoroughly-researched, well written and a must-have if you're shooting, collecting, restoring or trying to identify one of these historic rifles.

North Cape Publications is famous for its FOR COLLECTORS ONLY series and this book follows that format faithfully and successfully. I gave it five stars and keep right next to M.D. Waite's and B.D. Ernst's TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD.

5.0 out of 5 stars The .45-70 Springfield, February 22, 2012

This review is from: The .45-70 Springfield (Paperback)
I was looking for a reference book for my .45-70 Springfield to authenticate the rifle that was gifted to me. After some research of collectors it was suggested that the North Cape Publication, The .45-70 Springfield was the best book out there. One collector, and seller of the Springfield "Trapdoor" rifles includes this book with every sale of a rifle. This is by far an excellent book to period any part of the rifle. From pictures of the different screw types to differences in marking sizes to the thousandths of an inch that indicate the year of a part it's there.

I work with these type of books all the time, and have others from the same publishing Co. and all are a must have. Wild Boar out.

This review is from: The .45-70 Springfield (Paperback)
I purchased this book to help identify which model of .45-70 Springfield that I inherited from my father-in-law. With this book I answered all of my questions in a very informative and entertaining way. If I decide to sell the rifle, I will give the new owner this book because every .45-70 owner needs this book on their bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you ever wanted to know about the Springfield Trapdoor, April 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The .45-70 Springfield (Paperback)
This book is intended for collectors, but will be very useful to anyone who wants to know every detail and every variation of these rifles. Gun dealers will want this book in order to know just what they have for sale. Riflemen and gunsmiths will want this book because of the part by part detail it contains.
The first section gives a short history of the Trapdoor rifle. Then ten chapters are devoted to dissecting the rifle and discussing every variation of every part and every screw it contains. Next come chapters on accessories, markings, tools and ammunition. The appendices cover serial numbers, production, finishes, designations, cleaning, maintenance and more.
If you own one of these rifles this book will allow you asses its "correctness". If you are planning to buy one, this book will help you avoid some pitfalls such as mismatched or missing parts, modern replacement parts, or poor restoration work.
For its intended use there is no better book than this.
