Amazingly Helpful Book!,
This review is from: 45 Lazy Eye Exercises: Eye Patch Exercises To Improve Vision for Those Who Suffer From Amblyopia (Paperback)
As a young man, I was diagnosed with a lazy eye...My doctor gave me a patch that I had to wear to school for months. It was quite a life experience, though looking back, it probably was not as bad as it seemed. I came across this book and had to buy it just to see what I could have done as a child to fix this problem (which did cause some teasing) faster.
I LOVED this book! It is absolutely a must-have for any parent who is dealing with this problem with their children. You will have fun going through the exercises (and I guarantee that "Fun" is not something I would describe my past experience as). Your child will learn that you can overcome anything in life if you are willing to work at it (a very valuable lesson at a very young age). You will also feel rewarded because you will be actively helping your child (I have been told by my parents that it was quite a helpless feeling not being able to do more for me). Bottom line, I bought this book as a purely reflective tool to look back on my own experience, and I came away from reading it realizing that conditions like these can actually make you stronger if you deal with them the right way. Please buy this book today for you or your loved ones. You will not regret it. God Bless.

A must have book for parents of kids with Amblyopia (Lazy Eye),

This review is from: 45 Lazy Eye Exercises: Eye Patch Exercises To Improve Vision for Those Who Suffer From Amblyopia (Paperback)
I am the mother of a 4 year old girl with Amblyopia who needs to wear an eye patch. This book has so many ideas of things to do during patch time that are fun and also helpful. Wearing an eye patch is tough on our kids, and it is hard work. Those hours each day are long and my daughter fights me a lot about wearing her patch. Finally, we have an idea book packed full of activities/exercises. I wish I had this when we started patching, but even now - months later, it is a huge help. I have felt like I always suggest the same handful of activities over and over and this book has given me many more ideas. Most are appropriate for young children pre-k/and school age and if not they can be adapted. While not all 45 activities may appeal to your child you will certainly leave reading this with many more ideas and options. I also think this would be great for teachers who have kids in their classes with lazy eye. A must have "tool"! The author happens to be a parent of a child with Amblyopia with several years of experience and I am so thankful she has shared her knowledge to help out other parents, like me.

We bought this book a few weeks ago and were a little disappointed after we read through it. The Title reads "45 Lazy Eye Exercises" but I feel that it would be correct to rename it "General Tips and every day games for your child while patching". The book list out 8 general tips on how to encourage patching and 45 coloring, drawing and other Games or actives while patching". I would not index or list out the tip and games as they are so simple and obvious that would be a total give away. That would be unfair to the author who has made the effort and taken the time to put some thoughts together. In short don't expect some medically explained exercise that can help your child but a list of every day games that you can do with your child while he/she patches.

The book is more of a list than a book as a previous review stated. It is basically just a little explanation of what amblyopia is and "tips" on patching (positive reinforcement, decorating patches, being patient and consistent, keep a journal, proper environment, and give rewards), both of which I am sure your doctor would have given you if your child has been diagnosed with the condition. The book then goes into the 45 "exercises".The exercises are just 45 ideas of children's games and activities such as Legos, board games, chores, homework, reading, and other things that most parents already do with their children or that children do on their own. On each page there is an activity with a paragraph or two below it explaining how to do the activity with your child. I have a two year old that has to be patched daily and as most parents know it is difficult to get a two year old boy to do anything they don't want to! I was really hoping this book was going to be able to give me some ideas for things I haven't thought of myself. I was disappointed after thumbing through the book and very quickly realized it was not going to provide any real help. A lot of the ideas are for children ages like 4 and up since most children under 4 don't color, read, or use scissors. My take away from this book is basically what I knew already: The best way that seems to work (with a smaller child at least) is through distraction. When it is time to patch, just make sure you have an activity that will keep little hands and minds working. If they are building or working on something that they are excited about or really enjoy then keeping them engaged in the chosen activity and keeping their mind off of the patch then it will be a little easier. So basically, just think of what your child really enjoys and then use that time/activity to do the patching. Sometimes it helps to break up the time into two or more periods of the day. In all honesty, this book is not going to provide you any more or better information that what I included in this review. I gave it a 2 star rating as opoosed to a 1 star since the author was trying to help parents that are going through the same issue she has dealt with and it does give a little information for people that do not have any prior knowledge of amblyopia. Bottom line, save your money and just play with your kid or help them do homework or learn something during patch time.
