'4630 Bochum'--ausgezeichnet!!,
This review is from: 4630 Bochum (Audio CD)
I agree with the first reviewer. I went to school in Munich in fall 1984, and Gronemeyer's 'Maenner" from '4630 Bochum' was a smash that was played everywhere, and I just loved it. I only knew Groenemeyer as an actor in 'Das Boot' and had no idea he was a major German recording artist. While in Munich I got this album on LP, played it constantly, and replaced it on CD several years later, and I still listen to it. Gronemeyer has a really great rock voice, strong and passionate, and his band is really tight--some, if not all, of his band is still with him today. His strength is his lyrics. If you understand German, you'll see that his imagery is terrific--'Flugzeug in meinem Bauch' for example. In some ways, he reminds me a bit of Springsteen, which is high praise in my book (particularly the title track, about Gronemeyer's hometown of Bochum, which was an industrial town fallen on hard times). Every song on this album is very, very good, and the closing track, 'Mambo', is a gas. Highly recommended!

Early Groenemeyer is still excellent Groenemeyer!,
This review is from: 4630 Bochum (Audio CD)
This is early Groenemeyer: the sound is simple and not sophisticated, and the texts are light, even frivolous (e.g., "Maenner", "Mambo"). However, that does NOT detract from the excellent quality of this album! The performances are great, some of the songs are very moving (e.g., "Flugzeuge im Bauch"), and the music is tight and textured. Groenemeyer's voice isn't substantially different, I don't think, from his later albums (e.g., Chaos or Bleibt Alles Anders). His tribute to his home town ("Bochum") is very touching and an excellent opening track.

I moved to Nuernberg in 1986 and was exposed to this album through friends and fell in love with it. As the other reviewers have stated, understanding German will help listeners absorb the songs. I knew him only as a singer before Das Boot came out, and must say that I've not seen the entire film. Flugzeuge in meinem Bauch is one of my favorite mellow songs- there is so much emotion in his voice.
Great album. Classic album.

I really got into this album in 1985 when I bought the cassette in Frankfurt on a stopover. I wore it out then, and I'm doing my best to do the same now. Don't know what it is, but the strength of his voice, the lyrics and the great songs take me back to my twenties and give me the lust for life and eternal hope I had then in a less complicated time. I might have aged, but this album certainly hasn't.

4630 Bochum - A Classic,

This album is one of my top-10 all-time favorites. The lyrics are uncomplicated, the music is classic 80s, and the songs are varied and interesting. Every time I listen to it I'm taken back to certain times and places I've enjoyed in Germany. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Have the LP from my tour in Germany in the 1980's and 90's in the Army. Saw him first in 'Das Boot'. Germany girlfriend turnen me on to him, as well as Nicole, Julliane Werding and Mirielle Mattieu. (Yea, I know she's a Frenchie) Latest love is Hellene Fischer. Much prefer German that I can make out the distinctions in the words, not jammed up by rap or heavy rock. Only speak enough to get a beer and a wurst. Can also follow directions to get to the Hbf and find my way around a museum, castle or cathedral.
