5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome feeder with modification
This is a very easy feeder for the bright orange birds, however, take the 4 covers off and throw them away, forget the nectar, fill the holes with grape jelly! they absolutely love it! this is the second one of these we have had, the wind blew down (or squirrels) the feeder and broke the first one. This is the third year for the return of our oriole families all the way...

1.0 out of 5 stars Good feeder, AFTER several modifications.
I've never had an oriole feeder before. When I purchased this one and hung it up, it tipped to the side and leaked. So I modified the end of a half-inch diameter pole that I already had and mounted the feeder onto the pole. That took care of the tilting problem. Then I had ants crawl up the pole and fill the feeder. So I modified a hanging ant guard into a pole-mounted...

1.0 out of 5 stars Good feeder, AFTER several modifications., May 26, 2009

I've never had an oriole feeder before. When I purchased this one and hung it up, it tipped to the side and leaked. So I modified the end of a half-inch diameter pole that I already had and mounted the feeder onto the pole. That took care of the tilting problem. Then I had ants crawl up the pole and fill the feeder. So I modified a hanging ant guard into a pole-mounted ant guard. That took care of the ants. Then, LO AND BEHOLD, I had an oriole come and feed.........off of my HUMMINGBIRD feeder. A couple of times he sat on this oriole feeder and looked at it but he didn't know what to do with it. He must have moved on because I only saw him for a day. Then I decided to take a black sharpie marker and color some very small round 'faux' or fake feeding holes over the slits in the rubber orange slices so that if I got another oriole he might know what to do with the feeder and stick his beak into the slit opening thinking it was a round opening like the hummingbird feeders have. The trick did eventually work.........with a hummingbird. She came and had a good look at it and was fooled, she drank from the oriole feeder and I have photos to prove it (see the image gallery for this product). So....I'm still waiting on an oriole to feed from this feeder. Sheesh! what a pain!

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Really Work, May 15, 2009

Unfortunately this Oriole feeder did not work - the Orioles were attracted to it but weren't able to eat from it. I have another birder friend who got the same negative result. I recommend the Perky Pet 449-2 which the Orioles love and its easy to refill.

Oriole feeders with a narrow neck and bulbous shaped container are impossible to clean. So I looked for an alternative, and this looked like it would work. It was easy to clean, but it lists to one side when hung, and the fluid runs out. The important judgement came from the birds. Before I hung this one there were many orioles using the old one. Not one would use the new one. It hung for 10 days with no use and finally I took it down and rehung the old one. Within minutes the orioles were back. I'm still looking for a good, easy to clean oriole feeder that the birds will use.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too tippy!, June 18, 2008

Unfortunately this product does not work in a windy area. The feeder blows easily and the sticky food ends up on the ground. I have had more success with the bottle type feeders for orioles.

This is a bad idea all together. It's impossible to fill, the little wedges for orange slices don't work right, if it rains it dilutes the solution and you have to start over, it doesn't hang quite straight, you can't clean it without taking it all apart... And last of all I have yet to see an oriole go anywhere near it, they are still using our hummingbird feeders instead.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing product., May 16, 2007

I ordered the 16 oz. feeder as our old feeder was several years old and falling apart. The new feeder was a disappointment because it was not properly balanced and tilted/spilled when hung by the provided hook. I don't recommend it to anyone. I did not send it back because the shipping charges would make it even more of a bad buy. I'm sticking with Perky Pet products from now on.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor design, August 16, 2011

I ordered this particular feeder because of the soft access closures, helping to prevent bees/insects from getting inside it. But the bowl on this feeder is so shallow, that even the weight of an oriole on one side or any breeze tips it, causing the nectar to leak out. Also, the feeder never hangs straight, and the hanging hook has to be unscrewed from the base to remove the lid to clean it. I can slide the lid up the hook to add nectar, but it takes two hands and cannot be done without spilling the contents in the feeder. Other feeders I have allow the lid to be removed over the hook (larger hole in the lid).

1.0 out of 5 stars Orioles can't figure out how to get the nectar out., May 27, 2011

The eye of the hanger is to closed I have to tip the feeder up sideways to slide the eye of the hanger over the the shepherds hook, spilling the nectar out. None of my hummbird feeders has this problem. So I tried to hang it empty then fill it, which is just about impossible to hold it still so to not spill the nectar and snap the top on. The feeder does not hang level. I can only fill it about half way because the nectar runs to one side and then out if it is too full. I put an orange half in the center, skewered on the hanger, and filled the ant moat with grape jelly and had my first oriole visit the next day. I didn't even bother trying to test the tabs that supposedly will hold orange slices/quarters. I just don't get how they are supposed to hold the orange pieces securely. The orioles love the oranges and jelly but either don't know there's nectar in it or can't figure out how to get to the nectar. The orioles continue to visit the hummingbird feeders, and will even hang upside down trying to get to the nectar they can see but cannot reach. But no funny antics with this oriole feeder. After a week, I removed the nectar port covers and finally they are taking the nectar from the oriole feeder, but now there are large openings allowing what not to get in and spoil the nectar.

We use aluminum foil to make a pouch for each hole and load it with the jelly and here they come! very easy to maintain as well! highly reccomended!

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, September 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When this oriole feeder is hung with the rod it comes with it will lean to one side causeing the nectar to leak from the center seam making it completely useless.
